So what will you do when they call your name and you're not ready to go?
Everyone will stare at you and tell you what you know
That you're in too deep and you can't quite keep your secrets, one and all
We might just make it after all, on our own

I've noticed your rank system is flawed, and I think I know why.

In the US Army today, "Captain" is an O-3 rank, pretty low as far as officers go, might be company commander if he's lucky. And a "Major" in the US Army is O-4.

However, in the US NAVY, "Captain" is an O-6 rank, which would be the Army equivalent of Colonel. There's no way an O-3 would ever be given his own ship, not a chance, but an O-6 would. And O-6 outranks Major by a lot, so the Navy Captain would be able to say, "Major, go to Hell. Now. Go straight to Hell, and don't pass go, don't collect $200."

I decided that in the 200 or so years between current time and the time of this story, the classic army ranking system has become the norm for the Great Republic of Earth. Thanks, though.

Well in that case, the commander of the ship should be a Colonel. Not a Captain. There's still no way an O3 would be given a ship.

    ...Good point.

But because "A Captain's Log" sounds much cooler than "A Colonel's Log," I'm going to go ahead and use a rule often used in futuristic settings.

Because over two hundred years have passed from today to THE FUTURE (which just so happens to be the time that this story takes place), it's plausible that the military ranking system has changed to where this makes sense.

Well actually that just proves my point that everyone has seen star trek.

    Thank you

It also proves that you shouldn't predict someone's intrests by they're age.

Star Trek never interested me...Sci-fi in general never interested me.

Before you go making assumptions about my sources of inspiration, make sure you actually know what you're talking about.

Of course, you rarely seem to know what you're talking about, so I don't know if I can blame you.

So what will you do when they call your name and you're not ready to go?
