Thread: Age1/Age2 Refuge/NoRefuge Upkeep/WhyUpkeep?

    Default Age1/Age2 Refuge/NoRefuge Upkeep/WhyUpkeep?

Age 2 has no refuge, so what is the point of an upkeep at all?
Yes, you need sinks for the resources. Evony does not want casual players quitting because their troops starved while they were away.

Evony should entirely remove upkeep and crank up the food costs of troops. The food cost of marching should cost an arm and a leg, too. Evony could MASSIVELY increase march costs, but have no upkeep. This would achieve the goal of creating a food sink, yet avoid risking starvation.

If upkeep does not have to be paid in Age 2, then just remove it entirely. It's pointless to make players come up with clever ways to hide food. I understand that Evony does not want players to quit because their soldiers starved. Just move the food sinks to places other than upkeep (training and marching).

This idea could work for Age 1 as well. If Evony does not want casual players quitting Age 2 for this reason, then why is it okay to risk losing Age 1 casual players for the same reason?

Great idea. +rep for coming up with it.

And I think that the nature of Age I has discouraged casual players because:

    1) There is no servers without an attack option.
    2) Because of the refuge.

So getting rid of refuge (and upkeep altogether) is possibly a happy medium, allowing both serious and casual players to play.

    EDIT: Have to spread rep...IOU.

On age 1..........if you removed the upkeep, my god you could imagine the army sizes then?

LOL it would be limitless............unless a variable food cost came in to play when building troops. that way eventually it would cost 1 mil food just to train 1 warrior

I'm thinking most of the food sink would go to march costs. Evony could effectively limit the farming range. Let's say the cost of a typical 10-farm march cost 19 million food to go 20 miles, then it would be pointless to farm much farther than that. I don't think the training costs should be much more than 4-5 times the current costs.

This would be a great way to keep players happy. And would give players time to attack instead of worring about farming 24/7

Rota.... no more great ideas. Still have to give you rep for 3 post which I forgot what they were now...

that sounds good, but if you cant profit farming then how are you going to aquire food to march with? maybe farm 5 near you till you save up?

im sure there could be some balance somewhere, but im feeling dumb right now and cant think straight so ill let someone else try it

Rota, I am curious about this thread for two reasons. Reason One: I like the idea of no refuge. In fact, refuge was part of the reason I stopped playing the game.
Reason Two: hasn't this already been suggested? I thought someone already went to work coming up with other ways to burn food. One of them was higher building cost. Has the epic Rota made a slip-up?

People have asked that upkeep be removed. I'm not sure they offered the extreme increase in march costs to compensate for the loss of that food sink. Most people that suggest it, just don't want to need food. I want to retain the same need for food, but just move the place the food is spent.

Most "no upkeep" suggestions are just whiners who don't want the burden of farming food.
I want to retain the need to farm in order to use a large army. A higher training cost only impedes creation of an army. Greatly increasing the cost of marching can not only lessen farming (the range I spoke of earlier), but also burdens the continued use of that army. The removal of upkeep only stops the troops from starving to death, you still can't use them unless you obtain large quantities of food.

edit: What do you guys think would be a good increase for march costs? what would compensate for the removal of upkeep? x10 (just move the decimal point over one space)? x20? x50? x100(two decimal places)?

I have been playing Evony long enough to know that most players hardly march troops. Most players simply horde and stockpile troops, as much as they can.
If armies had no upkeep then limitless size armies would be stockpiled in cities, and never marched. Capping that city would be impossible. Imagine the havoc it would cause for already near impossible HCs to take from players.
We dont want players just hording limitless amounts of troops into a city. And IF they ever decided tomarch the troops, they could simply buy food or have members send it to them. March, then continue hording.
This is supposed to be a strategic war game. Not a troop stockpile contest.

Thanks to Boleslav for the Afro Samurai Signature series.

um...you do realize with no refuge in Age II it is possible to stockpile troops exactly like you are describing? Limitless army sizes can already be created by stuffing troops in a L16 and drafting to your heart's content.
