You need to buy a game unfortunately. I got Fortix for myself for $0.99, gave me full Steam privileges. On a slightly related note, TF2 is FTP, but $5 gets you premium (increases your item storage by 6x and lets you get hats on drops rather than just weps. Also lets you trade with other players, which can by quite useful.
