YESSSS they are in factories now! And the staff is always equipped with full-body-anti-ants-and-sweethearts armors.
Sugar is extracted from the dead bodies of sweet little girls like imnothere, after they have been made to watch Barbie movies and listen to Miley Cyrus albums. It is done in factories scattered throughout the world that are disguised as doll houses. This concentrated sweetness is far too sweet to be eaten as it is, so it has to be diluted 1:10 before it is packaged and sold.
Other by-products of the process include spices and all things nice but sugar is the main product.
