We disagree on a lot of fundamentals.Quote:
no, no, no no, no.
Pikes are great units on paper.
They are also priceless in practice. I'm thinking compact D here.
Imagine 700k pike and 400k archers. Defender has 183 intel. your pikemen have the same defense swordsmen would have.
They also have much more attack. Usually this is not useful in CD, but it comes in handy against mechs. During a ram attack, what would you prefer to have: 700k swordsmen who just sit there and slowly die, or 700k pikemen who die quicker but deal a lot more damage at a greater range?
Not to mention the obvious fact that pikemen, although more expensive to build (same price as archers), are considerably cheaper to feed. They are also quick to rebuild, as you've mentioned. They are much more effective against cavalry attacks. They are targetted first; learn to use that to your advantage.
BTW: i hate scouts. they eat like pigs, they die like flies, I ave yet to see a situation in which the scoutbomb is the most efficient solution, so I keep scouts for farming purposes ONLY and get some other scouthugger to do my scouting.
In order:
700k pike with a 183 INT hero isn't in comparision to 100k waves of warriors with medium heroes (100 to 150 att). the warriors will die 2 or 3 to 1. Overall, cost effective. With equal armies, one will easily have instant warriors.
Pikes greatest weakness is their range. Always has been. A hundred k archers will kill nearly 100k pikes and as you mentioned, around the same cost.
Losing 100k archers gains you honor and I lose honor. Good for me, bad for you.
INT doesn't compare to ATT. A 400 att hero with 100k rams will destroy 700k pikes with a 180+ INT hero. Rams have greater range and durability.
Troops don't target troops based on effectiveness, it is on total unit strength. If you built 1 mil warriors and 100k pikes, the cav are going after the warriors first. Once in range, they switch to what they can hit, like cav and phracts, and then pikes. In defense, the highest att total is the main target until range is set. Read the scout bomb article if you are not familiar with this.
Lastly, scouts are cheaper to feed and faster to build than pikes. They serve an offensive and defensive function. They are extremely fast. While most scout bombs kill 1 archer to 5 scouts, it makes it cost effective since you can use a significantly weaker hero to deal damage. A smart player starts with 100 scouts to bomb with scrub heroes. Fill the Feast Hall then bomb away. Only being online will help that player. With 2 min attacks or less or even more, offline will lose their line of defense quickly. Those ignorant and use expensive troops as defense will lose them to the inexpensive and faster building scouts.
It is a huge difference in opinion. I rather have a lot more warriors than pikes. protects from almost everything at the cost.
I've seen a report where a person or allies reinforce with 1k of layers and a mere 100k archers kill them all. Also seen a person play "possum" to trick someone to send that. An expensive assumption that phracts will be useful unless a player is offline. Yes, that attack can kill a lot of archers, with no layers and under 5k range. But 1k of pike/cav/phract/sword and 1 trap will destroy that attack.
