Bzzzzz...wrong
Average player would have 3-4 cities. Many people dont make it higher than knight. Flats make up around 30% of the map so it is closer to 200,000.
Just to let you know, NPC's are made on flats. The average city would have around 4 NPC's they make and farm. Leave room for around 10,000 active players.
On 129 of age 1 without players making too many NPCs there was still room for 230,000 players most of who had 1 city and most of who were placeholders, but it shows a semi accurate reflection of the capacity of these maps.
Age 2 maps are similar, except the historical cities. Given the higher drop rates you can expect about 70% of players to have maybe 5 cities or more within 2 months of opening, so i'd take a guess of up to 40,000 active player capacity.
It's odd on how many servers there is
The issue that seems to be forgotten is that a new player starting on an established server is not usually going to work out in the long run: they will simply be too far behind to ever catch up most of the time. Even with a good alliance, they are going to have sub-par techs making it harder to reinforce their city effectively as much bigger players colonize their cities and start taking their resources, troops and heroes every day. While it would be possible to up-rise against the suzerain, if the gap between the players is enough, that might simply not be possible if the suzerain has 3-4 times the troops the colonized player has.
It's usually better for them to start on a newer server because everyone is on the same footing initially where they won't have to deal with players that have massive standing armies already.
