In an Academy, you primarily spend Gold to research particular technologies. If you have a second city, it will need an Academy of the same level to "share" the already completed technologies.
Construction Research is the one exception. The time reduction from Construction will apply to all cities, regardless of their Academy status.
ill answer this question base on my experience.
While experimenting on poorman,s advance tele many months ago i found out the academy is essntial if you want to take advantage of the tech you upgraded.
Here is what happen.
I settled 100 miles away to move closer to an enemy once there i move 4k trans and 10k ballistas along with a good size army.
When i got there i wanted to jump from a level 1 City to level 5 via ballistas spam with minimum or zero loses which takes rather long.
Level 1 academy lost alot of ballistas.
as i leveled up my academy the lose stopped, i cant remember what level it takes to stop the losses, since i used speed up till level 7.
There are alot of benefit to having an academy which far out weight by not having it.
Experiement with it.
As a last note, Academy is like a library, all upgraded tech is there just as as long as you have the academy.
basicly u need the lvl academy in each city for your techs. If u get a new city and the academys lvls are 9 and ur techs are 10 they will only work as 9 techs.

you don't HAVE to have an academy, but it is highly recommended. Only building you HAVE to have is a Town Hall.
I noticed that you can't train cavalry without it. Academy lv5 is needed to train cavalry.
If you need an attack city to hit another player do not build your academy above lv.6 as that is all you need for Medicine Tech. Check out the 'CT' value in the academy to see what tech is carried over. So for a basic resource city you should have a lv.2 academy, for a archer attack you need AT LEAST a lv.4. For a full 100% troop tech you need a lv.6.
lv.7 does nothing different to a 6. 8 and 9 are only for defence (engineering).
Of course this is based on the fact that you do not plan on researching high level stuff in the new city.
I didn't read all the posts they just got boring after a while. you need an academy in your city.. Why?
Tech's from a lvl 6 academy will not pass to a lvl 1 academy.
lets say that you have an academy is lvl 6 in your main ,and you have lvl 1 academy at your secondy city.
The research you have done in your main will not go to your second without you having the same level of academy needed for it.
Ill explain a little more easier. lets say in your main city (lvl 6 academy) you have lvl 5 lumbering.
In your second city (lvl 1 academy) it will only show up for one level.
Rep me if i helped.
Anyone every tried scouting with a level 7 academy? even if you have a level 10 informtics tech.
What happens?
