I'm currently in the US census program and get paid 15 dollar per hour may seem great on the surface. However as I got my paid check. It turn out I lost almost 1/4 of my pay to taxes. When I was work at 7.25 per hour I don't pay that much taxes. I'm basely earning as much as my old job. So I going to have to find a new job soon.
That's called a progressive tax. You get paid more, so you're estimated to be in a higher tax bracket. Payroll deductions "per check" are estimated as though that is the same paycheck you will receive for every pay period of the year. The fact that it is a temporary job is not taken into account. This is why no hourly wage worker ever has a perfectly even tax return at the end of the year. There's always a little additional tax owed or a refund.

It was just 16 dollar for 2 week from my old job. The census job taxes is 150 dollar for 2 week. It a ten time more.

When you filled out the tax forms when you got hired, how many exemptions did you claim? You can claim zero for larger deductions, but a larger refund. Maybe you claimed one exemption for larger paychecks at your previous job, but chose the "zero" option for the census job.
Even if it was for two weeks of work they might pay monthly and you just came in on the back-end of that period. That will affect the math, too.
In the end it doesn't matter. You will end up with the same amount of money in your pocket once the tax refund is factored in. I can assure you that you are not getting ripped off.

When the census guy came to my door the other day I asked him how many hours he's getting a week and for how long...
He said he only is going to get like 10-15 hours a week for like 6 weeks max.
I put no tax exemption on it because I'm a single male with no kids. I'm not military or veteran. So I can't get taxes exemption. The taxes refund however I may not get it all. Maybe I should ride the government and go on welfare like almost everyone in my group.

and like I said in another section of the forum, I get a monthly stipend from the GI Bill for being a full time student. Enough to pay rent, bills, and groceries.
