Sinkhole 0.o

This is a real sinkhole... It swallowed a three story building in Guatemala.

I don't have much to say because I am stunned on how massively deep a sinkhole can be...

it does look shopped but the fact that it is all over the news shows that it isn't (well at least not to make it look deeper)

Its real alright...but a 'sinkhole'? That's almost perfectly circular? That I find disturbingly ODD!!! Looks more to me like a space 'probe' of some kind :oops: Freaky to say the least. And if there's one like THIS in Guatemala, who to say there isnt one somewhere else?!? :eek:

That's a big sink hole. But the overhead view is shooped. I can tell by the pixels and having seen quite a few shoops in my time.

I have been looking at this picture for a while and I have to say that is a really patched up street there. It looks like the local road crew uses it as a favourite spot to dump their excess bitumen.

As for the hole.
It's big.
It's very big.
Just because it's round doesn't make it fake as a circle is a natural shape and as such it can occur as a result of natural forces. The whole area could be at risk of further subsidence if that hole is deep enough as the soils look like deep sedimentary soils with no rock layers at all. I guess it all depends on the size of the space underneath that hole that everything fell into. If it is big enough, the whole neighbourhood could be under threat.

Anyway, I don't think the local road crew is going to be able to patch up that pot-hole in a hurry.

It's the shadows, Rodri. Not the circular hole. That's fine. It's the perfect circular shadow in the hole.

shadowing and angling probably, but it is odd that there is a conspicuous shadow line in middle of the shadows...

it probably is to make the picture look better... though it is definitely a sinkhole of great significance.

The dark circle at the bottom of the hole is not perfectly round and if you look, there are details such as broken pipes and such that a photo-shopper wouldn't bother with.

Natural forces shaped this planet and will continue to do so as long as there is a planet to shape. We humans are often left dumb-struck by natural events. Then again, this sort of subsidence can occur in mining areas as a result of a mine collapse but I have never seen it on this scale before.

You mean the cables that are running from what obviously are telephone poles?

Those lines are cool too. There's nothing wrong with them.

I know there aren't many to look at, but look at the other shadows in the picture and compare their size/shape/direction to the shadow in the hole.

Also, remember this is an oblique aerial photograph from a 'copter prolly and not a direct bird's eye view from an aircraft directly above.

@Rodri: I'm not doubting that this sinkhole exists or is huge.

No, I meant it was the shape of the hole, just down lower in the shadows... and yes, I know it is not a direct birds eye view...

I know it's bad but I'm not going to waste much time on this, there would be more shadows on the right wall of the hole.

edit after looking at it more: And that would be the shadow, not the hole itself. The sun isn't directly overhead in this photograph when you look at the other shadows that weren't shooped. But in the hole area, the sun is directly overhead.

really people, if it was shopped at all it would be to change the levels. this is actually how is would look if you were actually there looking from that angle at that time.. trust me, I have seen stuff like this.

Oh. Well. Um.

Desalv, go to the nearby university and go to the geography dept and speak to the secretary and ask to speak to the Head of the Dept and tell him/her how much you want to study geography and if you could be allowed into their computer lab occasionally to tinker around with stuff.

There has been very high rainfall in this area lately and this may have been the trigger to this event. That is not to say it was caused by the recent heavy rain but simply that the rain may have been the trigger for an event that would have happened sooner or later. An underground river may also have caused erosion to the roof of it's tunnel and caused the collapse.

Shouldn't there be a sarlacc in there?
