You could have stocked up enough food to support your army for a minimum of 2-5 days, just to tide you over if ever the free food buff expires exactly after 3 days. You could have also filled all your other city slots with new undeveloped cities before the merge which you can easily port to level 5 or 10 flats near you and then abandon for instant NPCs, and just come out of protection early to be able to farm them.
The map size wasn't included in the merge details given to the players, was it? So basically you were just assuming it'll be "larger", when all Dawn said about it was that it was going to be a "bigger world", which may or may not mean the same thing as a larger map. Your ESP is a bit off there ...
This merge is different because it combined previously merged servers, which means more people, so of course it would be crowded. However, this also opens up more chances of plundering resources from other players without having to march too far to get them.
I agree that the merge package doesn't compensate all of the efforts that the players will be exerting, but the setup is far from being unfair.
If you have any more woes about the merger and you feel that your opinions embody those of the majority of the server you are in, you can always contact the reps about it.
