OK; since there seems to be some difficulty with this, I've posted some options from which you might choose, should you care to do so. If you've read through the thread, you'll know that I personally favor "Other", but the choice is yours.
So... Why?
According to my recent rep I won this thread.
I do believe in the power of bribery.
And, incidentally, I gladly accept bribes... though I don't promise to do anything for them. :)
Without the question of "Why", there would be nothing. No knew technologies, no religion (DON'T BAN ME YET), and no civilization. The question of "Why" symbolizes the curiousity of Mankind, and also leads to it's advancement in everything. If we do not ask "Why", then there would be no "Because".
There. I just made this thread serious.
That's quite true; Why? is important.
Other questions are important to other people; engineers, for example, may prefer How? and researchers What?, explorers Where? and forum trolls Huh?... but Why? is a fundamental question to us all.
I'm going to leave the poll up a few more days before closing it, just to give folks a chance to get their opinions in. And besides, I still want to know Why?, and there's been very little given me for a definitive answer... :)

This is one of the fundamental questions of science.
Why does this do such-and-such? Why does electricity conduct through human skin, even though skin isn't a good conductor? Why does the lack of heat cause pain?
This question is what drives our quest for intelligence and our understanding of our complex world. It's one of the most basic of words, but one that has helped us reach the technology levels of today.

It justifies learning, and our actions. We ask why? So we must learn the answer. No one else can really tell you why, so in a sense, it drives us all to do things.

The thing about this is, of all the people that answered the poll thus far, none have responded "I don't know" or "I don't get it".
"Why?" is one of the questions that drives us, as has been observed before in this Thread and elsewhere. Humanity keeps moving, often forward, as a result of this question; we are compelled to explore, to experience, to learn. Our lives would be empty without questions like this... and we don't know the answers.
Oh, yes; there are religions that will tell us the answers. There are philosophies. But all of these require faith, they need willing belief. Even the new god Science, which can tell us What, When, How and Where (or How Fast but not both) demands belief; all logic is derived from first causes, none of which are self-evident by definition. Newton's Laws have been shown to be... well, more like Guidelines. The scientific method itself relies on the great presumption, "No-one has disproven this yet".
My point is not that religion, philosophy, and science are meaningless; quite the contrary. It is the quest for answers that gives life meaning.
The only proper answer to "Why?" is "I don't know - but I'm working on it."

Well, if someone is asking you why you're doing something, it just goes to show you that they don't know anything of what you're on about, so you should just smack them upside the head for being such a dullard. Common sense, really.

Well all hell broke loose then. The computer could not handle the input.
It simply blew its vacuum tubes. It needed to ask "Why, what?" but couldnt cause it was pure Logic and therefore "thought" or "had processed" it knew all the
answers, so had no ability to ask any questions.

Any way, i still find the question facinating to a degree, because with out
the connective 'why, what?' there is no logical answer. boooff :cool:
