The Purpose of the O.T.

There's other threads on the "Why are we all here, and what is it all about, really, when you get down to it?" order of things, but I'm here to rescue an interesting point that was dropped in passing in a presently locked thread. It just strikes me as worthy of discussion, and now it never will be unless we do it here.

Why is there an Off-topic Discussion forum category?

We've got some good minds here; we've also got some not-quite-so-good ones that think diagonally, in curves, right angles, corkscrews, and (in some cases) through mental dimensions of which the rest of us can't conceive. We ought to be able to come to a reasonable conclusion between us... and then instantly dismiss it in favor of the "Space Aliens And Tin Foil Hats" theory.

Hm, I would like to see this discussion Progress.

Truthfully, I think a section in the OT forum area where people Can discuss Politics, or Current Events would be cool. Obviously the agreement to discuss topics there should be that once the Thread becomes personal for people, then it gets closed. But if people stay on topic, state liable facts, and communicate their opinions in professional manners, it would be a pretty good idea.

My first impression when I first came here was: "Why are there forums about stuff unrelated to the game? Isn't this supposed to be an official forum for the Evony game?"

Thus I wish Evony would drastly change things and move all of us to a fan site and delete all posts that have not been reviewed and approved by Evony Staff or Representatives. And drastically simplify the thread categories to make them directly relevant to game related instructional information only as well as updates and news.

I've always likened it to the village at the heart of the region. In other words, the place where the community itself comes together simply to be a community.

Off topic is here to provide a sort of "Chill" place for people who playthe game, and make there ways onto the forums. After discussing and playing the game, they wanted a place for people to come and hang out and get back in touch with reality.

But instead, a speshul group of people who played the game for about 2 days come in, and claim this section theres. You can still smell the urine lingering from when they marked it. Anyone that wanted to come in and discuss is insta-flamed.

On the contrary, many of those here have played the game for months. And I've been playing since Civony, and still am. Only stupid people are insta-flamed. Maybe you're a little bitter about that?

What I like about OT is that once you're not interested in discussing the game, but want to stay on the forum you can just go on there to post about things that don't fit within any of the other categories. I'm pretty sure a lot of members only really stay here for OT because they've gotten bored of the game.

i was going to answer but now i dont feel like it. no ok i will anyway i'm already here typing.
you see children in the beginning there was this game. and people played it and wanted to talk to eachother about playing it. then they got to liking each other and wanted to talk about other things. the weather, the state of the roads, did they prefer chopin to bach, who was a better troller, why were the adds so misleading, can i borow your toothpaste for the weekend... you know genral chitchat.
and thus OT was created. in the beginning OT was the entiraty of the social corner. but the intelectual disscussers wanted the rp's to stop pushing their talks to page three because that was annoying. and the graphics kids couldnt find space to show off thier art and the whole thing branched out and grew so big it needed to be devided up.
and that children is why there is candy on my shoe. for the randomninity of fun and the promotion of "get to know you good times"

There is no defined purpose of the ot, it is just there for discussion of various things unrelated to evony the game itself, that my opinion anyway.

OK; I get the general idea of what you're saying.

Now, I'd like to propose an hypothesis:
The OT continues to exist because Evony management understands that it's an excellent idea to have a place for the paranoid and the passionate to blow off steam.

There's a thread to suggest improvements; that's a good spot for the more thoughtful to comment on the game, but it's also an ideal pressure release for those that become frustrated. (Not a criticism; it wouldn't be a strategy game if people didn't get frustrated.) This place, by logical exension, would exist as a pressure release for those that get frustrated with the forums. Without it, the forums would become chaotic and the frustration levels caused thereby would reduce the effectiveness of this place.

Of course, if the Matrix Parallax holds true, the system will generate its own solution as a manifestation of the agency of chaos. This solution will be a powerful forum poster with the ability to bend time and space to his or her will, perhaps even known as The One.

Beware, for the coming of The One will mark an age of great change; what we see shall not survive as it stands.

An O-T exists here only because it's standard practice in all game site's forum. And this O-T came very close to being shut down before. It may still happen...
It's a well known fact that the site directors, with the notable exception of Dawnseeker, do not give a hoot in hell for the forum as a whole anyway.

I agree with Wildor. OT is here because the developers looked at other online games and saw that all of their forums had a section like this. To their own detriment they have since then ignored this section unless there has been drama that reflects badly upon them or their game. The reason why online games have forum sections like this is to help build a sense of community by giving a place to interact in a fun way in a controlled enviroment.

I think my first post in this thread summed it up. It's a party in a padded cell.

If I was running a game company I would not allow a forum to:
1. Represent our company in any way
2. Be a place for players to blow off steam or post their opinions on the game
3. Be connected or supported by our company in any way
4. Hosted or managed by us

What I WOULD allow is:
1. A forum to be run by fans.

Saying that, I appreciate the Evony forums and understand that a community has developed here. The internet helps make new types of social networks/communities and we need to allow them to exist.

Ok, well that's why you aren't and will NEVER run a successful game company.

Lucas Arts has their own forum.
Jagex with their multitude of games have their own forum.
EA has their own forum.
Many other browser based games have their own forum.

Guess what? Most of them are set up pretty much the same, and they're all run by the company. Please, gather some knowledge on the subject before you post on it.
