It all depends where the emphasis on words are when the sentence is spoken aloud. Which "failed" and which "succeeding" is linked to which other words, if at all. It also matters which definition of each word you mean at any given point in the sentence. The two examples I gave are just some of at least a dozen permutations of ways you could interpret the sentence. Maybe you didn't mean succeeding as "inherit" but merely as "to follow." Then you would be talking about just walking behind someone with a position of power, rather than inheriting that position. Maybe both "succeeding"s just mean to achieve the goal.

It's a great question, JP. There's a TON of answers that could be correct. But, only you know what you are really asking. :cheer:
