i think they both have their place but basil is special... when you grow basil on mass around your outdoor entertaining area, you'll find they repel mosquitoes and flies in a totally natural way, works especially well when you let them go wild (flower and go to seed)

Basil leaves with slices of fresh mozzarella (proper mozzarella, mind!) and slices of tomato, drizzled with olive oil and a grinding of salt and pepper, FTW.
Seeing as I enjoy cooking many Italian pasta dishes I like to use basil more. I just don't care for oregano much.
