A human. When a human goes into a long coma, they are considered a vegetable. They throw away the outside, the physical world, and work in the mental plane. Then, when they decide to cut the life support, the outside of the corpse will be eaten. And what's left is thrown away by who ate the outside.

Also, possible a Lentil, but I'm not sure that's a vegetable.

My bet is that the answer is pictures.... Wait.... Maybe its memories...? I don't know lol
