being lazy my standard mix is 400 & 400 all techs 10, zero losses, any hero will do even a junk one out of the inn.
Here's a pretty basic breakdown of what to send and what techs you need. This has worked for me all through Age II.
Ballista / Transports
lvl1 20/20
lvl2 50/50
lvl3 170/170
lvl4 250/250
lvl5 500/500
Archery 8

Horseback 5 or 6
Archery 9

I am not sure how true it is but I have heard that if you have a higher horse back riding then your archery you tend to loose balls. I have a 10 archery and a 9 horseback and i can attack any lvl 5 npc with attack heros as low as 60 and w/ 500 balls and have no losses

Am guessing you upgraded you HBR... you've got it too high for archery!! DONT UPGRADE HBR AGAIN. Lvl 9 is the max for HBR, you need to get your archery upto lvl 10 before hitting lvl 5's again. If you work it out, you're moving too fast(too big a step each round) towards the enemy. You get into their range before you are in range for your arrows to reach the npc. Hence all the losses!!
for those of you who are suffering losses while having high att hero and hit technologies here is the solution.
the number 1 rule is that you have to have horse back riding 1 level less than your archery or you will suffer losses, and i noticed the ones that complained of losses were the ones that had horse back riding above or equal to their archery.
