As a potential starship fuel it's peerless in generating thrust, but pretty hard to contain and control. AM containment is achieved by EM fields, as any contact with a matter-based container is....well...bad. Current particle accelerators routinely make beams of positrons and ...anti-protons? and smash them into stuff at speed, but, as you say, in very small quantities.
Now our spaceship clearly must be assembled in Space, since there's no way we're gonna boost that blast-shield on Terrestrial rockets in one hit. Certainly can't fire up the AM-drive down here. May as well just build old boom boom and irradiate a continent.
