Fortunately, Japanese buildings (even the rural ones) are built to withstand these shakes. But look at the pictures, and it still looks terrible.

I was pretty sure the largest was India (don't know when) with 9.5? Could be wrong though.

Sorry, correction: Largest was in Chile at 9.5 Mag. Much worse than I thought...

Over 200~300 people found dead. A large amount wounded, and many are still missing. It's likely that death tolls will go up to 1000.

A nuclear powerplant was shut down, and the cooling system was disabled. Theres a possibility of Radiation leakage.

Over 4 million houses without power.

I'm watching NHK (Japanese News) right now via internet, warnings of aftershocks are coming up by the minute. Most are around 3~5 Mag, all around northern Japan.

Tsunami watches all over the coasts of Japan, including the opposite side of the Island.

I've heard news from my relatives and friends of how it's going. One lost a house from the Tsunami and hasn't heard from her brother yet.

Just some info on the situation. Everyone please wish for the best, and don't give up.

There's and "Ocean of Fire" in the Miyagi Prefecture, caused by the Earthquake. Firefighters are working hard to put the large area's fire out.

8.9 is absolutely HUGE. As we learn more about what has happened this day, I fear the news is going to get far worse before it gets better.

Yes, I agree completely. I feel and pray for all the victims, and also for those who are in potential danger. Also, as Rota said, 8.9 is massive, but I've seen videos of the tsunami. Utterly destructive.
