Massive 8.9 earthquake hits japan sparking multiple tsunamis. Hawaii and the west coast of United States expected to be hit by the tsunamis. So far 32 dead reported in Japan. Hawaii has also been hit by an earthquake a magnitude of 4.0. Hope everyone gets to safety especially people in california and Hawaii..
My thoughts go out to the victims.

As of right now, kids in all schools are being kept on school grounds. Trains are shut down, and a fire has come into light in one of the Eastern Oil Factories. Water is flooding through numerous Prefectures.
Japan's seen worse. Let's just hope we're better prepared than before.
I don't think the images on TV are doing justice to this quake. I don't think people realize how HUGE an 8.9 is.
That big earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1989 during the World Series was 6.9 on the scale. It destroyed entire neighborhoods and collapsed highways.
The 1906 "The Big One" that completely destroyed all of San francisco is estimated to have been between 7.9 and 8.2
8.9 is absolutely HUGE. As we learn more about what has happened this day, I fear the news is going to get far worse before it gets better.
It's the Fifth Largest Earthquake in History. Lemme' clarify.
The largest, was in Chile in the 60's, I believe. That was in the low 9.0s. Several others in Alaska, Somatra, Russia, and then Japan.
Fortunately, Japanese buildings (even the rural ones) are built to withstand these shakes. But look at the pictures, and it still looks terrible.
this morning to see this on the news wasn't surprising. I never would of expected but its not really surprising to me. Why? They had a 7 point something the other day and have had multiple aftershocks...
Either way, this is very very terrible. (I had better wording for that but oh well)
twitter seems to be a good way to stay up to date on this because of people sharing news on it and people in japan giving their own accounts. @daroldhiga seems to be posting some interesting stuff so I am keeping an eye on his twitter....
What I am truong to say is that the earthquake is entirely different today than it would have been in thee past because of the internet connecting the world...
I also would liked to encourage people to donate to relief funds to assist with relief efforts that will be taking place
These disasters on the news are getting more and more depressing to see. I want to say more, but some of the footage on TV is just leaving me with a loss for words. Here's to hoping for the best possible outcome for Japan's unfortunate situation, as well as for others facing (or having faced) recent natural disasters.
Well, I was in CA during the 1989 earthquake. I was walking home from high school when it hit. I almost fell down because the side to side motion was so intense. Cars were shaking on the street and car alarms were going off.
At 2:50ish today (I am in Nagoya, Japan now) my 6 story apartment building was moving back and forth. Nagoya is not near the epicenter of todays quake. I would estimate the shaking scale to be around 5.0 in our area. But near Tokyo is was much much more. The tidal waves or tsunamis as a result were between 3-6 meters (3-6 yards approx) high. What makes then so bad is that they are NOT a wall of water. Imagine the ocean tide rising between 3-6 meters in height. It basically floods all the low lands near the coast. Also, the shaking caused many building fires as stoves and heaters fell down... seeing how we are in winter time here. Near Tokyo and norther japan it was much more ugly than where we are. Nobody I know of has been hurt, but the news here reports ~70 dead so far. Imagine the Hurricane near New Oreleans and multiply that by 10. That is about the size of the damage caused by the flooding. They will be cleaning up for a while...
Mental image of a tidal wave.... Imagine a large dam broke. The flash flood waters come racing down a valley wiping out everything in their path. Houses float away, cars end up on roof tops. That is what a tidal wave does. It is basically a flash flood. Sometimes a large flash flood, sometimes a small flash flood. Todays tidal wave was large. It swept houses away.
This is freaky i live 20 mins away from the beach in southern california i was watching this on the news while i was at work last night... we have tsunami warnings

I'm watching NHK (Japanese News) right now via internet, warnings of aftershocks are coming up by the minute. Most are around 3~5 Mag, all around northern Japan.
Tsunami watches all over the coasts of Japan, including the opposite side of the Island.
I've heard news from my relatives and friends of how it's going. One lost a house from the Tsunami and hasn't heard from her brother yet.
Just some info on the situation. Everyone please wish for the best, and don't give up.
There's and "Ocean of Fire" in the Miyagi Prefecture, caused by the Earthquake. Firefighters are working hard to put the large area's fire out.

Yes, I agree completely. I feel and pray for all the victims, and also for those who are in potential danger. Also, as Rota said, 8.9 is massive, but I've seen videos of the tsunami. Utterly destructive.Quote:

I only just found out about this earlier this morning as I wasn't tuned into news reports last night. It's quite a shock. This is probably linked to the New Zealand earthquake as they both sit on the edge of the same tectonic plate. I hate to be a doom-sayer but it doesn't bode well for the west coasts of the Americas either, as they are on the edge of the same tectonic plate which seems to be in the process of shifting.

As I write, Ive finished a nightshift and see 2 more quakes have hit Japan of 6.7 since I last saw the news. The footage we have seen is terrifying, of just how quickly the Tsunami swamped the land. It's this that appears to have done most damage, as opposed to the quakes, for which surely the Japanese are the best prepared in the world, and thank goodness or the toll, I fear, would be higher from the quake itself.
I have requested a cease fire on our server for known Japanese members, tho its hard to tell who is where tbh, main reason for posting here, apart from to offer thoughts to those affected, is to request the same on all servers, if poss. I know this is easily abused, but if you are asked to back off someone and they hit you, fair game, but pls use common sense where poss.
Hosts with known Japanese members who havent yet logged in (I know the nets down in parts) should be accommodated where poss with reds. If everyone else shows common sense also..... at the end of the day this is a game...it aint a movie on TV peeps.
Thoughts to all affected by this, my next $30 pack wont go to evony but to aid charity.

Death toll is now... closing onto 1000... I can't believe it. I don't remember a time in my life when so many people and places close to me have been devastated to such extent. Never knew anyone, nor have ever been in Sumatra. I was too young to remember 9/11
There was a devastating Earthquake in Japan a few decades ago, but even that wasn't as strong.
Let's hope and pray that the death toll won't go any higher. Cling on to any hope you have, and hold it dear to you. Never give up.

MAn this is messed up, how bad do think southern california will be hit if it gets hit? i live 20 minutes away from hunnington beach and my job is only 10 mins from the beach not sure if anyone of u know where im talking about but if we get hit do you think im far enough from the shore?

EDIT: This was night time, and isn't even the whole picture. As you can see, also, there are numerous tsunami warnings and news of aftershocks littereing the picture's sides. That wasn't edited in, that is what the Japanese news looks like right now.
