Humans share an ancestor with Lemurs. All varieties of lemur are native to Madagascar. Some of our mutual ancestors got trapped when the great island split off the African coast. We took the evolutionary path to humans, and they followed a different path to become the lemurs we see today. (I did a whole big report on lemurs back in high school ;))
Likewise, ancient primates that were separated would follow different paths to become the gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, etc that we know today. We did not evolve from apes, but we share common ancestors before diverging onto different evolutionary paths.
