Overview:
Riddle threads have come and gone, but none have ever lasted very long because A) the organizer leaves or becomes disinterested; B) the thread lacks creative riddles; and C) there is no incentive to answer.
I have decided to start a new type of riddle competition. Every day I shall post a riddle in the OP (here) for everyone to view. The person who gets it right first shall be awarded a point. At the end of a two week segment, the user with the most points will win a prize! Isn't that exciting?
After every two week segment, I will update the Winners section of the OP with the winner of the previous two week segment.
Rules:
~You may post as many times as you like with an answer, EXCEPT you may not edit your original answer to something different, and you must wait until at least one other person posts after you until you may answer again.
Example: If Simi posts an answer, she may not edit it. She must also wait until LordMac posts after her before she can answer again.
**If you edit your answer it will be considered void**
~PLEASE refrain from just Googling the answer. I will try to make up as many riddles as I can, but sometimes I may end up succumbing to the internet. By using copypasta answers it ruins it for everyone. Please play fair.
~For each riddle you answer right, and you are the first one to get it, you will be awarded a point and your name will go on the leader board along with your point tally. If you have the most points by the end of a two week span, you will be awarded a prize and the title of Daily Riddle Competition King/Queen (for bragging rights only)
~In the result of a tie (at the end of a two week segment), the people who tied will both/ all be named King/Queen
~ I will now be posting the new riddle at around (hopefully, anyways) 9PM GMT -8. I apologize you you guys overseas, but 9 PM is about the only time that I am home and online usually every night.
~I will also accept ALTERNATE answers to the riddle that make sense and comply with all lines etc. You must justify all your points, I will not nitpick for you.
~ Limit of 2 points per round per person
Prizes:
This segment's prize is an avatar proclaiming your skillage at solving riddles!

And reputation points from me, Revoltion. If anyone else is willing to rep the winner, I'd be thankful.
NEW RULE: Effective immediately, Posting duplicate entries , will make you lose 30 points, and if possible, gain you a red rep from me.
Current Rankings:
Bree Fletcher: 1
Khalee: 4
Morgan Le Fay: 1
Current riddle:
A bus driver was heading down a street in Colorado. He went right past a stop sign without stopping, he turned left where there was a "no left turn" sign and he went the wrong way on a one-way street. Then he went on the left side of the road past a cop car. Still - he didn't break any traffic laws. Why not?
You are the elements.
Light refracting through the clear fur(alternatively, snow covering any bear will make it appear white),
sand in the eye (earth),
water will eventually become pee after you drink it,
wind will muss their hair,
water in the form of precipitation can ruin a celebrity's hair or clothing,
the dark can obscure vision, leading to cases of mistaken identity,
flame will cook a pancake,
carbonation in the champagne (air),
squeeze a balloon filled with air,
stare at the sun too long, and the it will do irreparable harm.
sry i just like bubbles
How do you explain this line using your elements theory, Rota?Quote:
I make celebrities look stupid and normal people look like celebrities
By the way, Nest got the answer already.
I missed that one as I was making the reasons, I have edited to fix that.
I know Nest got the traditional answer for that riddle, but that doesn't mean there aren't other valid responses. I enjoy trying to figure out valid replies to riddles that are not the "expected" answer. As long as the answer fits the riddle's criteria, then it is a correct response.
He's back in town, and looking for your new phone number.
How do the elements make normal people look like celebrities?
New riddle is up.
Forgive me if it's not that good, I wrote that one myself, plus I'm in a rush.
(Yes I'm aware that I double posted, but it was necessary.)
you are talking about WATER
I think you should put them up at a set time each day.
So you know, everyone has a fair shot at answering it if they want to.
And anyone else who gets a valid answer should get a point too.
Valid alternate answer, yes. I think I will add that to my rules. That way I don't have to end the competition so early.
As for time, I'm thinking 9pm GMT-8, unless otherwise specified.
I was actually planning on imementing a set time, but your other idea is good, so I'll add it in.
Thanks
9pm GMT -8 is 5am GMT 0 :(
You are light
Without the sun, we would not exist.
Expose yourself to solar radiation without the benefit of an atmosphere protecting you, and you will die
Light fills the air, yet you can see afar.
The sun is opaque, you cannot see through it.
Theatrical lighting has two main kinds. One has soft edges for area lighting, while another (like spotlights) has hard edges.
Turn on a lantern in the deepest chasm, and the area will fill with light.
The sunlight fills the sky above our heads, or a light fixture is in the ceiling.
Light is simply a name for a range of electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human eye, and electromagnetic radiation is everywhere.
Water is the obvious answer, but light is the best "unexpected" answer I could come up with. Maybe we can twist that last line about radiation into another alternative.
You are radiation.
The sun is a ball of radiation. Without the sun, we would not exist.
There are dangerous kinds of radiation that will kill.
Radiant energies surround us all the time, yet you can see afar.
The radiation inside the sun is opaque, you cannot see through it. The arc of a solar flare is visible.
It would be easy to characterize radiation like basic warmth from a furnace as "soft," while dangerous radiation that would kill you with only a short exposure time could be characterized as "hard."
The reason caves get warmer as you go deeper, is because they are filled with radiant energy from the Earth's core.
There are all sorts of radiations in the air around us, and above our heads.
Radiation of some kind is everywhere.
You left out the part about how light is soft and hard. However, those of us that use image editing software such as Photoshop will know about the "Hard Light" and "Soft Light" options when editing the blend mode of a layer.
I know Nest already got the answer, but I would say air.
I'll give you a point for that. It works.
Please note that the rules have been slightly changed in the OP. Riddles will now be posted at 9PM GMT -8. I will also accept an alternate answers that make sense up until I post the new riddle. Thus, Rev's answer of "air" is legit.
having two answers for any riddle makes it very very lame, and just because you can work in another answer for a riddle kinda makes the riddle null and void
Alot of riddles don't have two answers, so there won't always be an alternate. You also have to justify your alternate answer very well. I think I may only take one alternate per day, although I'm not sure yet.
The bonus with getting the correct answer is that you don't have to justify it.
I just realized you will be posting them at 11pm CST so that will pretty much knock me out of the running as im an early to bed early to rise kinda guy these days
I still think radiation was a good answer.
New riddle. I apologize for not posting one last night. An urgent family emergency called. Sorry guys. :(
"You are going to kill me with your axe" also works I think, but its probably too like Rota's to count.
New riddle. An easy one but I have to get ready for snowboarding tomorrow.
Each is the only one who took one.
Ooh, I found another couple.
Do you get more points for mentioning more than one?
I know the real answer (man named "Each"), but let's go hunting for correct alternatives again. :)
The men took down one pear and passed it around. Now they have eached grabbed a pear. Since it was the same pear, there are 11 left on the tree.
A dozen men obsessed with pears happened upon this bountiful tree. Each man took a pear. Then a madness overcame them as every one of them clamored for their favorite food in all of the world. The melee resulted in the deaths of the everybody... except one. The lone survivor stumbled away from the gory site with his plunder of 12 pears. Each man did grab a pear, and there were 11 left there. It just wasn't 11 pears left behind, it was 11 men.
They also put "Eleven" in the tree.
And 11 of the men took a pear, except it wasn't high. One took a high one.
