Most religious beliefs were established before people knew the world even had a definite size, or that anything substantial existed outside of <insert superior empire's boundaries at that time>.
BTW, the "four corners" bit actually kind of contradicts the flat earth theory too, as said theory suggests the world is a circle, and a circle has no corners. Therefore, a flat earth must be square.
