I'm not sure where I got the 12 now. I'm trying to find a source but everything says 11. That threw off my whole post then and makes me look kinda dumb. But oh well, the point still stands- it's not going to be a problem for 2012.
And I knew you didn't think it would be the end of the world, I'm just saying how those that do are not only lacking credible support to back their claim, but actually have credible support debunking their claim.

Let me take the conspiracy theorist for example.
This group strong believe that our Government is hiding something serious from us. They coincide the building of many D.U.M.B (Deep Underground Military Base) around our country with the 2012-2013 end of the world and to support that theory, they also included the planet X into the equation.
Even a very educated person can be lured to believe such theory with a very well organize evidence, specially how trust worthy our government has been.
When all this comes to past, it will make us a lot stronger, however, it will also make ignorance of many of us; that when the real end of the world do come around, even with significant evidence, we might just brush it off like all the others.
I wouldn't say it's astronomy based. I'd say it's faith based like religious armageddons. Astronomical evidence tends to oppose rather than support the 2012 theory, unless people simply assume scientists and the government are lying and out to get them. But even then it seems questionable to trust people that have no credibility in the field over those that do. Either way, in my opinion the belief of armageddon falls to faith rather than evidence, unless you want to consider easily disproven pseudo-facts as evidence.
A very educated person should be educated enough to do their own research on it instead of believing Mr. Hobo with a Boot for a Hat because he's good at pretending like he knows what he's talking about.
Nature is constant, our understanding of nature is variable ... What does this mean? All that we know could be absolutely wrong, and everything that the Mayans (sp)? knew could have been correct as we aren't 100% sure that we are correct with all of our theories.Quote:

The Mayans never predicted the end of the world; we put the end of the world theory in their mouths ourselves. It was just the end of their long-year cycle, like December 31st is the end of our yearly cycle. They chose to not start the next long-year cycle for the same reason that we don't currently produce Gregorian calendars for 7136- it's far enough ahead in the future that there's no immediate need for it.Quote:

I have witness educated people in the medical field and many others preparing for such event. I have heard of few millionaire buying into the hypes, due to fears of the possibility, despite their education level.

It is not the astronomy background that converted this people, it is the trust they have or none at all with their government.

Actually it seems I made a mistake; Mayans have measured time beyond 12/21/12, that date is just the end of the current b'ak'tun.
But people will believe what they want to believe. Though if people believe the end of the current b'ak'tun will also be the end of the world predicted by Mesoamericans, they should then believe the Mesoamerican's world creation/destruction mythology. After all, it's a little silly to say that the Mesoamericans have the credibility to determine the date of the end of the world, but dismiss their prediction of how and why the world will end. Wouldn't they know better than us?
I'm not as familiar with the Mayan belief of the Five Worlds, but as far as I know, it's similar to the Aztec belief of the Six Worlds. As far as that one goes, the best way to keep the end of the fifth world as we know it from happening is blood sacrifices to Huitzilopochtli. Which means trying to survive this armageddon actually increases its likelihood of happening. Given how we haven't been doing any blood sacrifices for about 500 years to Huitzilopochtli, though (thanks, Spanish conquistadors), we better start stepping up pronto if we want to meet the quota for next year. If we fail, the world will be destroyed by earthquakes and we'll be devoured by the Tzitzimimeh who will descend upon us from the stars when the sun ceases to rise in the sky. Though this is more likely to happen during the nemontemi rather than on December 21st.

Honestly speaking, no one exactly knows when the world gonna end. The Mayans only ended their calender. The Meso-Americans---well i hvnt heard of those guys, but im sure tribal people 2000 (or even 200) years ago would not have the means to determine the end of the world.
And maybe its better that noone knows when the world will end. Imagine the epidemic! The panic! The fear! Widespread confusion, riots, you name it! Trade would collapse. Crimes would have a booming period due to the confusion. Technically speaking, all law would be ignored due to the age-old human instinct of self preservation. There is no way some person can predict when the world will end. Really, I think that after they've said the world will end 99 times, you'd think people would ignore them. But, no, of course not. The only time the world could've ended, was when a World War started, or, the most believable of the 'World is Gonna END!!!' lies, in 2000. I mean, a new century, lots of people must've been scared about the world ending. But really, in 2012, December 21. Really? If the 'Christians' don't fly up into the sky on the 20th, the world isn't going to end.
The 2000 hype was silly in my opinion, besides Y2K. The universe doesn't conform to the Gregorian calendar or humanity's choice of when to start recording history.

Realistically, I think armageddon will not be a giant explosion of immediate destruction but rather a collapse of globalization. Mass civil unrest, genocide, starvation, diseases and a breakdown of society will cripple the first world nations. With morality out the window, the remaining military will fight over not just food and water but also trivial pleasures such as alcohol, tobacco and prostitutes.
The only ones immune will be tribal peoples in South America, Africa and islands far from continents. Groups with knowledge and recent experience of consistency farming and isolated from globalization won't have any problems, their world will not change much if at all. But we'll probably all be dead.
