Another shot in the dark......Eyes turned skyward....is this referring to flight or navigation, before we had gps ships etc used the stars to navigate their way around the world, I keep thinking the space theme is a walk up the garden path, when I googled france circa 1896 it led me to the French Navy.... I have to stop reading Kazza's posts, every idea she has sends me off googling again and my head is spinning.
According to wikipedia Leonardo da Vinci died in France:
Clos Lucé is a mansion in Amboise, France, located 500 metres from the royal Château d'Amboise, to which it is connected by an underground passageway. Built by Hugues d'Amboise in the middle of the fifteenth century, it was acquired in 1490 by Charles VIII of France for his wife, Anne de Bretagne. Later, it was used by Francis I, as well as his sister Marguerite de Navarre, who began writing her book entitled L'Heptaméron while living there.
In 1516, Francis I invited Leonardo da Vinci to Amboise and provided him with the Clos Lucé, then called Château de Cloux, as a place to stay and work.[1] Leonardo, a famous painter and inventor, arrived with three of his paintings, namely the Mona Lisa, Sainte Anne, and Saint Jean Baptiste. Leonardo lived at the Clos Lucé for the last three years of his life, and died there on 2 May 1519.
Part 1:
I don't know whether this is completely true or just my opinion, but France has always been a place for radical ideas to be formed.
In "Rise of Nations", you can "research" different types of Governments.

Perhaps a hint that we are getting another dimension added to the game?

Another new facet of the game; more realistic commerce perhaps?
Sorry about posting several things that have been said before but just trying to gather all the accrued knowledge into 1 place while trying to add my own particle or two.
Hope I didn't just waste 30 minutes of my life finding all this ;)
OK,so the numbers are the French Flag, as pointed out several times and verified here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_France).
So what is the significance of 1896 in France? And does May 6 tie into that at all?
1896 saw the launch of the Gaulois, a French battleship. Not sure how this ties into the name Aether though.......seems like they are hinting that the skies will be involved as well. Maybe a version that has aircraft and ships as part of the attack forces? Or a game that is evony like, based on real maps of France and Europe, like Diplomacy is?
evony dont even know what theyre doing theyll prob just throw something together the day before and we will end up with another ***** that we can moan about forever more :)
The clues suggest the Tricolour, France and 1896 which all indeed point to this novel.
a bit more (from wiki)...
Chemical ingredients are purchased at his specifications and paid for quite openly at US stores, as are mechanical parts ordered from American foundries completely unaware of their true purpose, and so construction of the Fulgurator moves ahead.
As is proven by practice, a few grams of Roch's explosive suffice to blow a passable tunnel through many metres of tough volcanic rock. Engineer Serko remarks in talking with Hart that several thousands tons might be enough to blow up the entire Earth and render it into a new Asteroid Belt - which seems to be the first time that such a suggestion was made in science fiction ..............The paranoid Roch does, however, keep to himself the secret of the detonator or "Deflagrator".............. five warships dispatched by the world's main five powers. Of these powers, three are certainly France, which is mentioned explicitly; Britain, which is the world's main naval power and in whose territory the secret pirate base is located; and the US, which is directly affected by Karraje's piracy. Germany, Italy and Russia might all be among the contributors of the other two ships. Presumably, the five powers were both cooperating against the common pirate threat and trying to keep an eye on each other and prevent any of their number from getting sole possession of the Fulgurator.........
Multiple parts which when assembled make something complete and awesome.
Over the years, the colors of the French National flag have come to represent liberty, equality, and fraternity - all ideals associated with the French Revolution. But the meaning behind the colors has come after the fact, and there are many theories.
Multiple parts that work together for freedom, liberty.
