Its not obvious because they are using linear growth for production of resource techs and non linear for construction.
I started this thread so maybe someone out there can post their results. I am aware of the trebs in Level 6 or higher but I am sure there has to be a number of ballistas that will work or at least a specific number of catapults. Now I have sent 2600 ballistas at a level 6 and lost everything. so it definitely has to be more ballistas. I have also sent 1200 ballistas and 275 catapults and lost all ballistas and lost no catapults. I am tempted to send just 275 catapults to see if I can win...but with 700 ballistas and 275 catapults i lost ballistas...no catapults and it took 76 rounds. Do you think it will work within 100 rounds? I definitely do not want to lose catapults at all but I am kind of getting a hint that 275 catapults will do the trick when it comes to level 6 barbs. If anyone reads this when you go beyond 100 rounds do you lose whatever you sent at it? or do they just come home without a scratch as a loser because it took too long. Again I am 100% sure that they are out of range for the trebs and that's why i never lose 1 catapult.
Maybe we can figure out a test for this. I am tempted to just test to see if it goes 100 rounds or not.
Rigs
well never sent catapults but sent 3800+ blistas n got out with some losses.....

i will try 5k next time..........arch lvl 10,HBR lvl 9,tradition upgrading to lvl 10
I've done it with 4k Ballista, level 10 researches across the board. 115 attack hero.
Lost 250 ballista.
I think it's time we all learnt to lose units personally. Everyone says this game isn't Simcity so why should we be able to get all the food we need without losing anything?
DT's will outrange anything you send, i have tried 8k ballistas and lost 339, i then tried 10k ballista and lost 284
i dont know if you can put in some other troops to reduce the loss in balla's but what ever you do there will be losses.
To conquer any city npc or not you need to the the following.
1) Clear out most of the traps/logs/rocks with warrior wave
2) Destroy enemy defense (mean towers and if the gates are open the garrisoning army)
3a) If have less amount abatis send cavarly waves until the loyalty hit the 15
3b) If the city has lot of abatis clear them or send pikemen/swordsman/archer waves in any combination (pikemen the fastest but and archer+swords can handle a smaller recruited force what appaers in conquering progress)
4) Send more waves to raise the public gravience until the loyalty reach 6-8 (if gates are closed and defending force in the city) or 0 then stop
5) The doors are automatically opened whenthe loyalty reach 5, so send a bigger force to clear the defense army
6) Once the loyalty reach the zero you can conquer the city if you have free city space, send some food and gold with the last army or transport it after you done
7) Use public gravience, praying to raise the loyalty
Some other advices:
-NPC-s regenerate 15% of their army and traps instantly after attack and in every 6 min so need much bigger force
-Send the waves at least 1 min difference. Sometimes it happens the opponent finish some traps, troops (with opened gates) or get reinforcement or he just open his gate
-If he online you will have hard time so try to rob every resources from every town og him. This prevent him to use disaster relief and praying, but he can get transports from allies. If his army starve (negative food production) they will refuge
-Conquering city usually results war between your alliances so be careful
it seems as a city gets lower on loyalty it becomes more dificult to conquer u dont need a city slot because you can take a city to 0 loyalty any way without takeing the city,u may just need to send stronger attacks .
Remember if it is the player last city you can not take it from him
