My guess is calavry would be better in cost/ratio of taking out the abatis.
Liked info in thread. Agreed that this should be made into a sticky provided that it's 1 post and 1 page length otherwise too much info to digest. Would like to see a similar thread (to be made into a sticky also) on translating scout reports for needed troop size to attack based on each soldier category.
For example scout report shows 5 swordsmen, 10 pikemen, 20 archers. What I need to know is that 1 swordsman = ???, 1 pikeman = ???, 20 archers = ???, etc; with ??? is what would be an effective countermeasure. I would have done this myself but I'm new.
Despite what the original poster stated, i have found through numerous attacks, that if you dont send cavalry(not cavalary original poster, please learn to spellcheck) then abatis have absolutely no effect on the attack. nada, zip, zilch. Abatis will not damage workers, or transporters.
It has gotten to the point that I only send cavalry out against valleys. Other than that they are just for defense, because they are way too expensive to suicide against abatis.
To reiterate, Abatis have ZERO effect on infantry and transporters. so leave the prima donnas at home and send in the grunts.
bump, good thread please sticky
I have experimented with this before. If you send just workers and/or transports, they will die, but if you send them with other troops, like swordsmen, then they have no effect. I don't know how the amount of troops needed works.
For those who don't like Darwin's lame math test..
Few = 1 - 24
Pack = 25 - 49
Lots = 50 - 99
Horde = 100 - 249
Throng = 250 - 499
Swarm = 500 - 999
Zounds = 1,000 - 2,499
Legion = 2,500 - 4,999
Bulk = 5,000 - 10,000
Giga = 10,000 - Infinite

You're welcome, please don't flame me for this. And no offense intended, Darwin.
I agree. An exploit is where its use differs drastically from its original intent. There are many many games out there where certain "features" have been exploited. It's people like Darwin that understand the game dynamics in order to enhance his position. The only regret I have is that I wasn't able to start this game early enough to us this technique.
ALSO, this gives the devs the heads-up on this possible prestige farming or not.
I tried this with the result of 1 prestige earned from 1 build demolish. Is it seriously worth it, no.
when conquering flats for making a new city how would i go about that if anyone could help me. there is a lvl 3 flats near me how many men should i send or what should i do ?
Yes new players should be told that level of walls mean nothing it's the stuff on those walls....Only upgrade when your out of spaces or need to upgrade your town hall. So many players keep building there walls to like level 7 and 8 and only have a few thousand defenses on them. Take the time to build them up before you upgrade them and also get those troop numbers up. It's all a balancing act...you cant get to far forward without bringing up the rest. No point having a huge army with little food coming in. No point in having huge walls with nothing on them. Took me two weeks to max out the spaces on level 7 walls. But now it will take a large number to take them down. Hope this helps newbies cause if not they will just get ransacked after their first week...
This isn't quite true Val. The effect they have is on loyalty. If you have any defenses still intact the loyalty you lose by being hit is lower than if you have no defenses in place. If you want to capture a city then you're going to want to kill off the abatis so you can a) perform the fast scout assault, which is both dangerous and difficult to perform with any abatis up. b) increase each attacks total loyalty drop.
You can do scout attacks with abatis up providing you send enough to beat down the wall, but you'll only drop loyalty by 1, with abatis down that 1 becomes a 4, so you can send far less attacks to drop loyalty down to ideally 12 before the long wait sets in ;p
The best defense against an attack if you're online and know you can't beat down the incoming army, build 1 abatis just prior to them sending their scout spam (which you should expect them to start seconds after their cav have take down your abatis), force them to slow down and send another wave of cav, hopefully they'll be coming to die to however many archers towers you can build during the time it takes for the cav to land. Either way you'll then want to build 1 more abatis to force them to send a full army again, seeing as you'll have a few towers up as well as at least 1 abatis, scout spamming has been removed as an option for them! At which point you'll want to queue up as many towers as you can timed to complete a 1minute after there next attack lands...this is important because you don't want them to die against the incoming forces and now you're one step ahead of them in the defense race and by this point you should have bought yourself enough time that you can keep your loyalty levels up via comforting. The next problem becomes maintaining enough food to keep comforting, which you should be able to easily time, however only send as much as you need to keep comforting, eventually when they see they won't succeed in burning down your loyalty they'll give up. Although they'll probably come back later.
This is an exploit that should be fixed. Any Mods or Devs want to comment?
An exploit that should be fixed? This is just using the game's prestige system to your DISadvantage. People that do this not only will spend countless hours of zombified clicking in order to gain very LITTLE prestige, but they will in turn lose a TON of resources that could of been better spent on an army or defensive fortifications.
This isn't a bug.
The most you can gain doing this is a little over 1,000 prestige per hour. Keep in mind during that hour you will have NO time to take a break, and you will be clicking like mad every second to keep up with the construction / deconstruction on each city.
I say the dev's leave it as is... so that we have more people in the game gaining useless prestige and growing fat on their throne with no army.
Man... hook, line, sinker.
Excellent job, Darwin. I wouldn't have thought it possible to get this many people debating a post that was obviously a joke to begin with. My con man hat is off to you, brother.
Method Too Long for Such Little Prestige
So, when units move, is it only one side that moves, an the other stays put, or do both sides move towards the middle? Which would result in half the rounds before they meet...
Thanks for a readable, no frills post.
This is how reference material should be presented.
Darwin
Excellent post mate this is loud and clear for all those that had trouble understanding. Thanks for your time and effort put in, Maybe you could investigate Defensive calculations defending from Catapults??
I see the idea, I would call this Prestige whoring?? Not my style of play but benefits some I guess, Not quiet sure why prestige is so important?? surely it just makes you a target for someone who is trying to advance above you.....
Do wall defenses even help at all if your gates are open? I haven't seen a definitive answer to this question in any of the other threads I've read.
It's called a senior medal box. several probably. ;)
I believe the ballistas do not move. If all you have are archer towers vs ballista, 1 ballista will take out about 70 archer towers before it dies from failure to destroy wall in 100 rounds.
As others have said before me, excellent guide! Certainly worthy of a sticky. Good job!
please expalin this battle, if rockfalls take out siege weapons?

I belive the defending city was NPC lvl8
So if i had archery lvl 7, wih archers and the enemy had archery 4, with towers. So basically i outrange him. Does that mean my archers will sit there all day shooting and not losing a single archer? or do the towers "move" closer to my archers regardless of being stuck to walls?
it seems like a lot of people want to know the answer to this question so ill put in my 2 cents.
i am about 90% sure this is what happens.
your ballistae will NOT move up and they WILL destroy the towers
BUT on the other hand, if you get to round 100 and not all the towers are destroyed, all of your troops (ballistae) will die.
so just make sure you have enough to kill their towers in 100 rounds. (which is really not that difficult)
Rollinglogs, rockfalls, abatis, and traps do not attack siege weapons..so, for instance, if you attack with JUST ballistas and transports, the only defense that attacks you is the Archer towers...which, as it happens, can't reach you depending on the level of your archery vs the defenders..
of course, you could still lose to open gates, but thats another discussion.
Thank you to the last two posters who are clearing up the issue.
Does the same apply with archers of greater range than the towers?
Great Guide Thumbs up
My favorite post... It has helped me and plenty of other Noob's.
Thanks for this guide. I have noticed several threads where people seem annoyed that people ask this. They say, "Search the threads, you stupid noobs!" But I have failed to find a search function in this forum yet. Maybe the forum software has changed or I'm looking in the wrong place, but I find the lack of a search function to be the biggest problem with finding anything helpful in these forums.
And of course, as soon as I post this, a search item appears on the menu, where there were originally only 4 items, now there are 8. No wonder newbies have problems.
