It originated from the hardcore punk movement in Washington D.C. Yes, we're not talking about true punk like Ramones, but we're talking about the newer punk.

There are a lot of bands out there that blend punk and emo. Senses Fail is one I can think off the top of my head. There's much more.

Heck My Chemical Romance is a big one that is punk and emo. They have a real distinct style derived out of it, kind of operatic theater music, but I can see both the punk and emo in it.

Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Ozzy Ozbourne, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Alice Cooper, Apocalyptica.

Just a few artists I enjoy.

Oh, the occasional Journey song, like Wheel in the Sky.

You people who support emo are so wrong. What these bands are part of is what popular media likes to call "pop-punk", even though they are not punk in any way. They're just a bunch of crybabies who like to complain to the world about their problems in the form of music instead of getting actual help.

You're just falling into the same view as pop culture.

Plenty of emo bands that aren't crybabies.

And listen to anything rock. Heavy metal was formed as the result of an anti-establishment movement. So there's a lot of complaining there.

if you read what mods have posted stop on the emo topic. and as weird as it may seem to you many genres of music do the whole i got dumped and im gunna miss here stuff. For instance country is one of the genres that does it and even "metal groups" do it also. Its a fact you have to live with that bands sing about heartache for another example the song every rose has its thorn. based on emotions. and even the metal songs that u love so much are emotions just hateful emotions lol. So do us a favor and think before you type. Judging by how much you are defending this all im guessing you are very emotional about the topic.

However, you are being rather narrow.

Music, in any form, can be weepy, moany, and sissy.

Take for example country music. Often associated with drunken whining hillbillies, despite that there is in fact country artists who do not fit the label.
I personally hate country, so I'm not going to dwell on it.

Journey, as my next example, has a few weepy songs, but a few not so weepy songs.

And have you heard poison by Alice cooper? I mean, that's heartache, they just throw on makeup to give it more hardcore spin.

It all comes down to the Genre, as to what the weepy songs are going to sound like.

Music is a pool. Everything about it feeds on one another. That's the only reason I don't like how humanity forms divisions, is they start to hate on the divisions they don't support.

Put it all together. And its back to being music.

Just love it.

Emo actually is not a new thing. It has been around within music ever since it started. It's only now become some label.

I've always used music as a way to channel my aggression, sadness, disparity and rock hard rollar coaster times. A good album to me will not just reflect one certain vibe. A great album to me will have its ballads of sadness, mixed in with its hardcore F-U songs.

That's the only thing that contains who I am. From melodic to destructive.

On the topic of music, are there any among you who consider hip hop, and stuff similar (No instruments, little actual singing) to be music?

I like some old hip hop, but I'm not into the stuff out today. It's still music but man I'm not a fan of remixed and supermanufactured music. But I guess it has its place at the clubs.

The older stuff was ok. It was music.

The modern stuff however, is not.

It's remixed synthetic music, sampled all to hell.
It's half ass lyrics, poorly sung, and then they change the sound so that the vocals don't sound like the original singer.

It's noise, without rhyme or reason.

Discuss.

Dance stuff like Basshunter I hate that stuff partly because its not music its a noise and partly because when one of those big jump up and down songs came on at a disco I got crushed underneath everyone and someone jumped on my face it was really sore.

What the DJ's spin, is music. If it has a beat for a pulse, it's music.

But I do feel bad that you got stomped on...but I have to ask...just what were you doing on the FLOOR of the dance floor if you weren't there to dance?

My personal pet hate is girls wearing heels (stiletto's in particular) and they decide it's a good idea to stomp. I went home with a hole in my shoes and blood drenched socks once.

But as Chino and Harok says, we all come together for the love of music, no matter what we're classified as.

It's all taste though, I prefer the stuff you guys say probably isn't music, simply because I cannot for the love of god find a consistent beat to shuffle to in any other genre of music other than hard dance.

What happened was I was in the middle at the front of the floor and there were speakers at the front. With everyone pushing forward I accidentally jumped sort of on the speaker then lost my footing and it happened. The dance music I don't mind it but its not something you listen to on your iPod if you know what I mean. Its only good for partying and dancing with mates.

Oh...unlucky.

And actually I do listen to hard dance on my ipod, and on the computer...and in the car...and at home on the stereo...I <3 hardstyle/trance.

But alot of my friends who aren't ravers, think the same as you. It's only good for parties and the like. Hence they always ask me to bring my cd collection when I go to house parties.

Cause I got the musics.

Yea I hate to say it, but I still consider it music. Everything has a time and a place. And as long as it has some beat to it, and it makes someone move, it tends to be music.

I used to be so anti hip-hop, but seriously you really can't dance to heavy metal music. I mean you can rock out, head bang, and make a mess of yourself in movement, but its so hard to dance to. Hip-hop, remixed, super-manufactured without instruments still gets the ladies moving and you gotta join in LOL.

There's that group, trying to remember what they're called. Stomp, I think. They use like every day stuff to make music. Trash can lids, w/e lol. Truely whether something is music or is noise is in the listener's ear. There's some heavy metal where the dude just screams out lyrics from beginning to end, I consider noise lol.

Exactly man! I totally see your point. I wouldn't listen to all that club mix music in an ipod by myself. For that, I usually go the angry music route. It's wierd how music affects you though. If I listen to angry music I get totally calm, if I go calm I get angry lol.

It's all about how I post a song, by one of the bands I listed, that rejects my own views, in favors of the others, and nobody even finds it lul-worthy.

Yeah fully understandable, everyone has their own tastes and can rock out to whatever they want. But when I say rock, I mean rock *synthesized word*. lol

And Chino I know what you mean aye, my missus gets calm when she listens to all her screamo metal stuff, and I can honestly say I fall asleep when I've got my headphones on full ball cranking out some crazy happy hard tunes. I did fall asleep at Sublime once, on the line of speakers up the back of the VooDoo lounge. The vibrations were just so...I dunno....relaxing...heh

I think Nik Import was playing some pretty trancey beats though, Life Beyond Earth or something (headhunterz) with alot less full on kicks, hence it lulled me into a coma.

That said, kind of reminded me why I don't go to subbies as often, Ashe won't take any ideas seriously from promoters. "Open a hardstyle room, I swear to Defqon almighty that Subbies will poo all over Impulse then! We'll pull the crowds! It's what the people want. Hardstyle! Bring it!" But no. Most of the resident DJ's are trance players, and while that DOES pull a crowd that loves it, we need a fix of hardstyle.

So go to impulse aye? Stays open til mid-day.

My Uncle is a DJ, and he produces some music I can bear to listen too, and call music.

He actually did a show in halifax just last night.

What style of music does he play? Electro, Commercial dance, hard-dance, trance, style, happy hard, UK happy, terror-core, gabber, fidget, industrial electro, UK Dance, psy-trance, Prog-tech/electro/trance?

Uhhh... none of the above?

I would classify it as a branch off of hip hop myself, but more back to the 80s style of it.

Oh, cool, you should get him to teach you how to use his decks and mixer, tis a good skill to have at parties. And remember, vinyl scratching pwns.

My friend Dan, Shezza and myself once went to Impulse on RnB night (saturday nights) and started shuffling among all the black hip hoppers. We were getting some nasty arse looks let me tell ya! They were like '**** friday night is your night, tonight this club is ours!' lol.

Hip hop dancing looks like sex.

would have been funny if you walked in and said "is it just me or did it get dark in here* haha and i use to work as a DJ.
