I'm a little late on actually reading this thread. I grew up in SoCal so had to deal with tarantulas and black widows all the time. Here are the listed symptoms for black widow bites.
Initially, almost all bites from the latrodectus species is felt as an immediate pinprick sensation, and local pain. In approximately one hour after the bite, a small, erythematous area develops. This becomes larger with a blanched center. The venom acts through a calcium-mediated mechanism, which is the release of acetylcholine and nor-epinephrine. Subsequently , the vast majority of patients, around 70%, do experience hypertension, nausea, light sensitivity to the eyes, which is called photophobia, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, and muscle spasms and aches. These individuals can present like an acute abdomen, and mimic a ruptured ovarian cyst or appendicitis. In one study in Australia, however, around 70% of the individuals only presented with local symptoms and did not present with systemic symptoms.
Drizz, are you positive you didn't rupture an ovarian cyst?
quite sure, i mean i already went through menapause.
the bite was noticable but im outside all the time w/ lil clothing on anyways.. i always get wicked painful bug bites. i did NOT know about the photosensitivity, but i did actually get that .. BUT i was taking painkillers at the time and hydrocodone and oxycodone always make my eyes dry and sensitive so thats kinda inconclusive.
The absolute weirdest factor was the fatigue.. like everything felt TWICE as heavy i sht you not.. it was like when you first wake up and your body doesnt really respond like its suppose to i.e. you cant make a tight fist and such... well it was like that ALL the time.. it was really weird. i had/have shortness of breath but i thought i was just experiencing that because i was fat....
The recommended treatment is intravenous pain killers, or if you can get the anti-venom.
But painkillers will work until the poison works it's way out of the body.
I have come close to having a black widow drop on my head when I was 10. Fell asleep with my light on because I was listening to the Dr. Dimento show, woke up to see a black widow hanging just a foot from my face. Freaked me out since I was deathly afraid of spiders at the time, so I slid off my bed and slept on the couch lol
i think its crazy how spiders n' snakes are like the biggest phobias out there..
i'll tell you what scares me.. TIGERS! i dont think i could smash one of those w/ my foot...
Aww man. I had something to say, related to this thread, and I totally forgot.
Yeah, but think of it this way. Spiders can get you when you sleep, they can get you whenever they want. I am no longer afraid of spiders but there are many reasons to fear things so small that can kill you.
There is a type of tarantula that makes burrows in the ground, they can also leap a good distance. My friend and I used to poke sticks down their holes and would have to be very careful not to get one jump on your face when you do this.
Everyone knows tigers can leap and take you down, but who expects a spider to. It's just freaky, although I have always loved jumping spiders. They are like little tanks with how they move, and they come in so many cool colors, although it's no fun when they are aggressive and stalking you when you are afraid of them. Good thing I got over that fear lol
LoL lil'tanks..
i never looked at em like that but its so true!
