Mutant plants

Ok, so my wife and I have always had flowers we plant grow far bigger than they ever should and so forth, but this year our yard is out of control.

I brought home a rose bush that was almost dead, it is now 4ft tall and stays green during winter. My Japanese iris stays green all during winter and has grown from a 1ft radius to now around 3ft. We have wild grapes growing on our fence, they have taken over. We have rose of sharon growing, what usually takes 10-15 yrs, it has grown in 1 yr. Now we have all kinds of poisonous plants growing. There are two that we both recognize but we just cannot place, and we have nightshade growing. When we moved in to this house, the yard was very sparse in vegetation, it was almost complete dirt, now things are out of control even with pruning and digging things up. They are taking over lol


So, since this is the topic of discussion around our house lately, does anyone else have mutant plants growing or non-native plants taking over? If so, what type?

well, we dont, but do you live anywhere near a nuclear plant? just curious...

Nope we are 1hour 30min away from the closest nuclear plant lol

I will also add, that none of my neighbors are having this problem, and most people in my area have a hard time getting gardens to grow because this area was strip mined years ago and the soil is very poor.

Last year there were a couple of tomato plants that were only supposed to grow to standard size, only a couple of feet, and grew almost 20 foot high, and several hundred tomatos.

beer makes pumpkins bigger, are you watering with water?

We don't water the plants in our yard, not even the flowers, have never needed to. They grow just fine after we plant them. We have had azaleas that are only supposed to get as big as 3ft grow to 6ft.

We have watermelon(or is it just plain melon?) plants and it's like taking over a huge chunk on the ground dirt on the side of our backyard against the wall. :) And it's like growing out more and more and the tiny melons are hidden behind the leaves! So adorable. >.<

That rose bush isn't 4 ft. It's taller than I am, so it's at least 5 1/2 ft...minimum. He's right, we water NOTHING, we don't do much of anything to the garden. Occasionally I weed it or hack at stuff with pruning shears. That's about it.

The whole yard has gone mutant and is starting to resemble a rain forest, while the other yards have sparse plantings and some grass. I wouldn't mind normally, but the sudden rise in poisonous plants is freaking me out, especially since we can't seem to get the neighbor kids to stop daring each other to eat various random berries. Sigh.

That is why we are getting rid of the nightshade, one berry can kill a child, it takes a few more to kill an adult.

new theory. was your garden blessed by a traveling shawman? wandering botinest? or lost demi-god?

Probably a lot of nitrogen and phosphates in the soil. Douse the ground near the plants you don't want with something that is highly acidic or basic. Ammonia and bleach are probably the most easily obtainable. This will limit growth but (probably) not kill the plants.

I sprayed weed killer where the poisonous plants are growing, they just got bigger. So chemical alteration of the soil is not going to work. As the soil where they are growing is odd, they are near evergreens which make the soil acidic, yet things that don't like acidic soil are growing like mad there and the evergreens are green as can be.

I have a few theories about why we get mutant plants everywhere we live, but I will keep those to myself. :) Zen, I honestly don't think so, only because our soil is the same as all the neighbors, but we are the only ones with this happening. Also, the soil is pretty acidic to start with, because we have blue rhododendron and bright pink azaleas flourishing in it.

Oh, and I do dump coffee dregs in the garden, so that probably helps the acidity along.

Well, my yard does not grow since the Stupid Deer eat everything except Century Plants- they even eat the Holly bushes, which they are not supposed to eat.

thats wht you need Deer!!

why don't you try taking seedlings of a variety of the plants and plant them elsewhere? that'd let you know if it's the plants or the soil.

Mix garlic, cator oil, and white pepper in a spray bottle. Let it sit for several days for the oils from the garlic to mix in. Spray it on your garden, it works as a pesticide and to keep animals from eating your plants.

...or holy water...

Holy water burns me.

so you just fertilize with coffee grounds? thoes are actualy suposed to be realy good for a garden. when i worked at Starbucks we had someone in every other day begging to get out grounds. but it was against company policy to sell or give them away

No, not the grounds. I've done that before, though. Mostly, I sit out on the porch with my morning coffee, and when I get to the last swallow or two in the cup, I toss what is left out into the garden. That's it.

There was a time when I would fertilize and mulch and prune and shape and everything.....but my gardens were just normal. I got tired of it and I just started ignoring the gardens and now you see what happens as a result. The universe is messing with us big time.

Well, we have tried that- and they ate it anyway- they are completely domesticated and have lost all ability to fend for themselves, relying on our yards for food, i'm tempted to get a hunting bow and put them out of their misery as they are now a danger to themselves as they will not run from vehicles.

Wow, those are some strange deer you have lol

I would so adopt them as pets! Get bales of alfalfa/clover hay and put them out. They will likely prefer that to your plants. :) Then get a salt lick for them and let them get used to you until you can get close enough to feed them out of your hand. Then brush them every day and name them, and walk them around town on a leash. Wicked cool!

No, they bite, and kick, and are full of disease carring ticks- not good pets, rather have a venison steak.

Venison is yummy, but there's medicine you can put on their fur to get rid of the fleas and ticks. And they don't kick if they want you around. You people have no imagination when it comes to pets!
