Honestly? Were you not here before the ads? There were hundreds of racy, racists, vulgar and innapropriate alliance and player names. WAY before the ads started. They would create offensive alliances and spam war. Did the ads perhaps increase this type of profile? Maybe, but there are no numbers to support this. Did the ads also attract fine outstanding citizens of the world like yourself? Well you are here, so it must have.
Does Victorias Secret attract every pervert off the street, to have them roaming around in the store? No. Does Abercrombie and Fitch, with their very racy ads, which sells mostly to teens, get degenerates buying their clothes because their cataloques had some nudity in them? No.
Lets refer to Japans culture, where they are less sexually repressed and view some of their ads. Very racy, very sexual and sometimes near soft core. Does that make every japanese, or every person buying from those advertisers perverts? No.
I agree, it probably did attractive a few more less then outstanding people to the site than if they wouldn't have advertised that. But did it completely destroy the morality of the games social interaction? I don't think so.
Lastly, lets think about what the number one thing the internet is used for: Adult material. That is fact. So there are already millions of "degenerates" on the internet everyday. But I argue; Just because you view adult material, I person do not believe you are a degenerate or any less moral. Of course my more religious counterparts in the humanity pool might disagree, this is my opinion. So because some people start playing because they saw some boobs, I don't see as a huge issue.
I see, so in spite of the fact that they already had an ongoing problem with inappropriate IGN and alliance names, which still hasnt been curtailed, evony decided to intentionally start an ad campaign using soft core p.orn. Thats interesting.
If this was adult only game it wouldnt matter, but evony does advertise and cater to children too,and as such they have a responsibility to protect the safety and welfare of their underage customers.
The thing is, these advertisements have been around since the games conception, in fact the very first Civony add I saw featured a woman with a white cloth thing pulled down rather far. Plus there was the whole issue with them using pictures from other websites for the adds. I'll admit that the adds do tend to be attention catching, but the best adds were, in my opinion, the ones in the middle, after Civony but before the current generation. The ones that didn't feature woman at all and just had the knight on them.
Personally, I'm mostly ashamed of myself for appealing to my more primal nature, but that is a discussion for another day.
At one point, and in fact currently at choice moments, I am embarrassed to play this game because of the advertisements. I think it did destroy the morality of the game in most serious and real life circles, if only because the game is likened to the ads and it takes a bit of explaining when someone sees that... I've already went through it with my mother and father on two separate occasions, plus several of my friends. I've since stopped talking about the game. If people can't play the game without being embarrassed by the ads, then use I'd say they destroyed the morality of the game's social interactions.
Yes, at the present it isn't that huge of a deal. However it is showing a, in my opinion, degeneration in society. There was a time when everybody would have looked down on this with disgust, and a few still do.
I'm not going to blame the Evony ads as they are a product of the trend, not the starter. However, in a book I am currently writing I have made the statement that the increased use of sexuality in the media is a major issue. It is to the point where you can't fire up the internet, your television or the radio without being exposed to it. And it is only getting worse. In my opinion this is signaling a regression in society, and a major one.
Ah, I digress, lets not turn this into a philosophical debate...
To me here is where I stand with the ads.
As for the use of sex, I'm fine with corporations using such to sell their product, yet blend it in with your product. The Evony ads that use the sex selling points don't really connect to the game in anyway. When you talk Victoria Secret and other clothing brands, yes they use sex as well. But due to the nature of their companies' product, they can because the point of the ads is that with our clothing, you to can look this sexy. It blends with its product where Evony's does not. Therefore, all thesee ads manage to do is give Evony a bad brand name around thereby hindering its potential to expand and become a well respected name in gaming circles.
Overall, Evony needs to sell its name more, rather then sell fake women. I have seen promises (had one yesterday in fact), and now I wait for this to occur as to perhaps give my feedback on the matter.
well, if you look on those commercials, there is plenty there that connects it to burger king. They now have an icon they use and can have interact with people. The commercial also doesn't focus on the female but rather sticks to a current theme that Burger King has been using. Television commercials and static ads are quite a bit different as well. Now, if Evony would like to make a trade-marked character (like a knight of some-sort) and have him save a sexy looking female in the ad, thats fine because it sticks to a theme related to the game.
Overall, the most successful advertising schemes contain no sexual material at all really. Take Walmart for example. They perhaps developed the simplest charcter that has become a great advertising icon, and last I checked, there was nothing sexual about:). And even though not extremely well connected to Walmart's objective, they blended it in well by having him do price "roll backs". All in all, a brilliant marketing scheme.
