That paragraph of his made no sense whatsoever. Something about getting drunk makes you a hypocrite and not responsible enough to have a kid? Many responsible people with children get drunk here and there and are still completely responsible parents and adults.

Indulging in adult activity does not make you a hypocrite, does not make you unfit as a parent, does not make you irresponsible. If my wife and I have sex, does that make me a bad parent? If I have a beer before I go to bed, does that effect my child? If I decide to stay up all night watching ****, am I now no longer a responsible parent? The answer to all of these is NO.

As an adult I should be able to enjoy adult activities, I should not have to be responsible for every other persons child, only my own.

i keep hearing that old saying "(something somthing) but it takes a village to raise a child." my son plays games, but i regulate what and how much. perhaps i am too leaneant with my regulations but i do pay attention and talk with him about his games. i find my self agreeing with both Abacax and Logrus dispite haveing taken opiset vews. the parents of today, on the majority, need to step up their parenting. most of my generation had leanent parents and/ or grandparents. with the 3rd generation being even more lax in parneting skills what can you expect but that socity will be asked to bare the burden of raiseing the 4th. is that right? no i dont belive it is. will it change? no i dont belive it will. so the question them becomes, do we step up and help shape the lives around us? or do we calmly say "your not my problem" and justify leaving these children to fend for themselfs as their parents have already done? its a hard choice. since there is not much you can do on an indavidual lvl on line muchless .... dangit i need breakfast i lost my train of thought

I am finding this discussion fascinating.

My personal approach to Evony so far has been to strike a balance between restrained behavior and free behavior. In the world chat I refrain from speech and topics which I wouldn't want my kid brother to hear.

In alliance chat I occasionally say things I wouldn't feel free to say on the open channel. I don't become upset with my alliance members for bringing up certain topics or becoming more than a little raunchy either as I feel a closed chat room is an appropriate place for this behavior which does has its own place within Evony in my opinion. Of course as the host of the alliance I can also be reasonably sure (although I admit not 100%) that no children are part of our alliance.

I hope this thread continues. I am really enjoying reading everyone's view points on this.

Let me breakdown my views on this a little better. In your neighborhood, yes you should keep an eye out for the children, you should not however have to be responsible for them. The internet is too large and has a few billion users. The internet as Candle has pointed out, needs to be regulated by the parents of the child. There is no reason adults on the internet cannot have fun and talk about adult things and joke with each other in adult ways just because someone around the world does not supervise their child on the internet.

We cannot be responsible for other peoples children. Look out for them, yes. Help keep them safe, yes. But I for one refuse to be responsible for other peoples children and it is not my responsibility to become a puritan in an adult situation just because someone is not paying attention to what their child is doing on the internet.

I think that what he is saying here, is that he is assuming you are not taking responsibility for your action when you drink. Therefore he made the assumption that you place the responsibility of your child on someone else implying that you are relying on society.

Solomon, here is saying in a very confusion fashion, that, parents today, can try as hard as they want to filter out what there children see, however, no matter what, there is going to be some way to manuver around the system so that kids will see something that they shouldn't. Its inevitable. Therefore, he is saying that it is in fact society's job, at the same time to try and clean up its actions as well. So that when those children get around the barriers put in place to prevent their kids from seeing things they shouldn't, there is nothing that is too terribly bad for them to see.

Candel, this is what I am trying to point out is mostly stated in your post. While yes it is our job and our duty to protect our children, it is also our job to protect the children around us. This is why I agree with you Abracax on many levels, that it is our duty to protect our children and prevent them from seeing the horrible things in our world today. However, again they will eventually see around those barriers, and when they do, what is the world that they will see?

This is a common ground that I think we just will have to agree to disagree on. I agree with everything that you said except that we shouldn't alter our behavior when we encounter children on the internet.

While we shouldn't become puritans, I think that we should, watch our language and be mindful of the fact that kids are watching. If your kids managed to get around your filters, and saw things you didn't want them to see, would you rather have them end up in a place where they were attacked, and made fund of, similar to an incedent that occurred recently, or would you rather have them find a place, that while there was some adult content, that when people were aware of a child's presence they were kind and polite to them, and didn't swear etc around them?

Just food for thought. I have to go visit a friend now, before I go, as this topic is not really about children and Evony, but rather children and the Internet, I am going to change the topic name a little bit.

I think logrus has said it all really, but like I have posted before if parents are worried about the internet they look at my post or they can pm me because i know a way to block things.

blocking is not the answer. i grew up so incredably shelted that 1/2 the time i didnt know what my friends were talking about. we did not have internet, we did not have cable tv. i watched star track and the nightly news and was sent to bed. i was sent outside to play and while i'm gratefull my imagination was so lovingly nurtured, it was also starved for matriel. as a result when i reached my majority and was alowed to leave the house i want crazy breaking ever rule my parents placed on my that i felt was stupid and unnessasary. for example; my sisters and i were not alowed to call boys becasue "girls who call boys get pregnant" so when i went to college i called every phone in the boys dorm in one day just to prove my mother wrong. we wernt alowed more then 1hr of tv in a day. so while at college i spent 3 whole days infront of the tv. and i still cant walk a way from one if its on. my grades sufferd becaue i was so bussy breaking every stupid rule i hated to much as a child. and i droped out to my lasting regret.
as a parent i see the need to guid and teach self disaplin, but haveing been SO incredably sheltered as a child i think my son may infact recive too much freedoms. i will galdly explain anything he comes accross, but i'm not about to make rules with out explaning why they are nessacary and when there will be exceptions to them
