I'm trying to find out how to make an use a rainbow.

From what I've seen I believe a rainbow is when you use a little of everything. :\
Idk a really good number for fortifications since I put all my effort in Archer Towers and just let my ballistae and archers do the rest.
Rainbow or Layer or Darwin method is a commonly used attack scheme and use only requires that you send meatshield units, namely Swordsmen, Warriors and pikemen to cover your Main attack Force, namely Archers.
The way this system works is that each group of units will only attack one other units and in most cases either the Fastest or Most Valuable unit type. Sending meatshields in rainbow attacks stops the enemy from attacking your main force and attacking those weak units before attacking the better damaging unit.
Make it rain and then wait for it to stop. Voila! Rainbow.
All you have to do in reality is to send other troops such as Pikemen and Swordsmen with your Archers and whoever you attack's troops will hit the Pikemen first giving Archers time to fire, after they kill the Pikemen they will attack the Swordsmen which gives the Archers another turn to fire or get in range.
This can be done with more troops and will save the lives of your Archers when attacking a big player.
For defense all you have to do is make the troops and open your gate. they will have to be killed before the real damaging targets (Archer Towers, Archers, Ballistae, Catapults) can be attacked.
Aww rainbows are pretty :)
How many of each Meatshield would you need per archer
Hello can anyone help?
When light shines through rain droplets, some wavelengths of light are bent to varying degrees as they pass through the water. This seperates the light into it's spectrum of colors allowing you to see a rainbow.
Jeez just help him.
A rainbow essentially is sending at least one of every troop you have in your barracks to kill wall defences of opposing player. The wall defences focus on the troop they are supposed to kill, instead of the rest. I.E abatis will focus on horses rather than archers to start with.
So rainbow .. at least one of everything, depending on what you're going up against.
Kinda for the wrong reasons.
Abatis will only take out cavalry and cataphracts, so if there are none, the abatis will never trigger.
Traps will take out part of each layer in the rainbow affected by them.
Rainbows take advantage of the way the combat system works where the leading wave of melee defenders will stop to engage the leading wave of attackers even if there is only a single attacker and a 1000 defenders or a single defender and 1000 attackers while the ranged units pound them mercilessly.
Ranged units, on the other-hand, ignore the layering if the opposing ranged units are in range, at which point they simply attack the opposing ranged units.
What this has to do with taking out wall fortifications is to send waves of warriors + rainbow to get the warriors closer to the walls before taking damage from the towers. This has the side effect of clearing out part of the opposing forces defensive rainbow if their gates are open.
Something like
5000 warriors
1000 Pikemen
1000 Swordsmen
1000 Archers
1000 Cavalry
1000 Cataphracts
What that does is take out: Trebuchets, Rolling Logs, Traps and Abatis so that the main attacking force doesn't start combat at max range.
Archer + rainbow is for taking out opposing armies such that each layer of the rainbow will stop the opposing army for one round allowing the archers/ballistae/catapults to shoot at them. In some cases archers, ballistae and catapults are layers for cavalry and cataphracts.
a rainbow is something only god can make, and it comes in pretty colors.
This has been proven false. Add warriors to the spam and more abatis will die. I still haven't figured out why, but it does. Now with the scouting necessary, hard to prove. I've proven on other threads that warriors with cav will add to their deaths.
That's what warrriors spams are for.Quote:

I don't 100% agree with all above, but probably some of the best explanations.Quote:

Archer + rainbow is for taking out opposing armies such that each layer of the rainbow will stop the opposing army for one round allowing the archers/ballistae/catapults to shoot at them. In some cases archers, ballistae and catapults are layers for cavalry and cataphracts.
Layers attack opportunistic targets first also known as the fastest ones. Then they switch to ranged targets. Then switch to expensive targets.
Usually a rainbow is enough to slow down attacks on the strongest force. An archer rainbow could be 1 of warrior/scout/pikemen/swordmen. I personally find warriors do nothing but slow the attack. Others use 1 of everything but swordsmen. They add extra swordsmen cuz they can absorb attacks longer than archers. Say somrthing like 20k. I personally have never done it. seems 20k swords die as fast as 1 in my opinion.
Some people will add cavalry/cataphracts. This triggers abatis and doesn't seem to help unless they have zero. Seige weapons are slow and never get in the fight fast enough for rainbow archers.
Now with cavalry and/or cataphracts rainbows, adding some archers is a good thing. Cavalry and scouts are targeted first by opposing archers. This gives time for the cataphracts to get close while the archers are attacking archers. The most effective attack I saw was 15k archers. Not sure if less would do better or worse. When facing 100k + archers, I would assume it works as well as 15k, but haven't seen evidence of this yet.
Lastly, their is Ram spam. Rams are very slow so everything is faster. Allows them time to get up and personal. Even 1 catapult/ballista don't slow a Ram attack down.
Every thing I've seen on ballistas have been much less on spam and more on power. The only real defense is archers, and if you are sending fast infantry, the ballistas won't catch up by the time. Everything is dead except archers, depending how many. From what I read, ballista layers only work on barb cities.
Layers are an attack they take advantage of game mechanics that make no sense. A layered attack is sent either against a weak player than doesn't know the game well, or after the player has been spammed down most/all their non-tower defense. Afterwards, they send a layer to clean the rest out.
Keep in mind layers work both ways, but is usually better for the offense. The statement has already been written, take down the rest of the defenses with spam and scout that person over and over. If gates closed, layers are great. If open, you have to deal with his layers too.
Spam and layers are the only two real tactics this game has come down to. What you use is important, but they are both variations of the same thing.
you can send 1 of each army type if you were using archers as a main unit, if you were using cataprhacts like me, the only thing that can wipe out the meatshield is to send archers with the cataphracts, i'll demonstrate, first wave, enemy have 99990 archers sent, the rest is meatshield, now, we have 70k cataphracts, and 30k archers, no AT, the archers will take out the meatshield before the catas reach them, every archers die, as i recalled, about 15-23k catas died, we won, why? because cata's speed is 750, archers's range is 1200, so archers have 1 round to shoot free, when round 2 is up, no meatshield is alive, catas still moving up and reached archers wipe them all out in 10-12 rounds, of course, when moving catas will take lost, but not much
I had a report that showed 20 cav/30 archers/200 warriors kill off 72 abatis. Now with the spamming reports hidden, it is much harder to show this point. Mostof the other attacks from low/mid attack heros yield 20+ abatis destroyed, but I have had more than a few with different heros. They were nothing amazing so still do not know why I can pull 72 abatis deaths while adding warriors. Could be a glitch or I spammed it low enough that cav did more damage, but later reports had similar results.
When you send 72 waves of spam attacks, you see a lot of different results. Well, SAW.
I personally believe it is something like the scout glitch. You send 100k scouts, they get to the archers before anything else and kill 15-30k depending on hero differences. Send 1 pikemen with that same 99999 scouts and you won't lose one archer.
