Antirainbow tactics(special for cavalry and cataphract)

First of all, for everyone who has been and hasn't been or the one that knew and didn't knew about the rainbow tactics, i'll get to this first.

Rainbow: is the tactics that mostly used by everyone(as far as i know, it seems like everyone:D ), this is which you send in about 95-99% pure archers and only 1-5% other kind of units, like swordmen, pikemen, cavalry, bla bla bla. And this is actually effective to block the defender units's attacks by putting up meatshield then let the archers free to shoot them.If we have 1 of 1 kind of meatshield, the archers will have 1 round of free shot, the more rounds calls for more troops or more kind of units..., defenders had a had time with this tactics.Some build up cavalry to defend but not enough and still failed, some play the same tactics and the winner is decided by the larger amount of army, too costly i suppose.Well, not anymore, i've developed 1 more tactic, theory it should be effective against the rainbow tactics(80-95%).Personally i call it Perigrine rainbow.

It's quite simple, :rolleyes: we've all known that cataphract is the strongest mele unit, the fastest and toughest, we'll use that quality in this tactic, we've also known that archer is effective to almost every kind of army, long ranged and fast moving makes them perfect for this tactic,too. :confused: Now, cataphract can outrun the archer in 2 rounds, the range of archer is 1200 and the speed of cataphract(Ca) is 750, so it's easy to closed in. So, combined all that quality, i'll do an example:

99000 archers(Ar)
100 warriors(Wa)
500 pikemen(Pi)
400 swordsmen(Sw)

vs

70000 Ca
30000 Ar

at first, if we removed the archers in the defender force,i'm sure the defender will loose, but if we added them in, 10k-30k archers, they'll wipe out the meatshield before they even get closed to the cataphract, Ca will continued moving forward the Ar eventually, in 2-3 rounds they will have reached the Ar, in 10-12 rounds they would have destroyed the Ar. Ar has long range which means defender and attacker will both take casualties, but since Ca is strong, takes about 4 shots of Ar to kill one, but the defending Ar won't be so lucky, they'll take large lost, but before they all die, they had taken care of all meat shield.When the battle is over, according to the following numbers above, i say about 10-18 Ca died, 20-27k Ar died.
Now it gets tricky by sending ballistas and mechanical unit in to join the battle, here's an example

10000 Sw
20000 Ballista(Ba)
10000 Cavalry(Cav)

vs

85000 Ca
10000 Ar
5000 Ba

2000 Archer towers, 500 defendsive trebuchet

You've noticed that the numbers of each unit changed and more was put in. the reason i decress the Ar troops is to lower the risk of most Ar will be destroyed before they can even attack the MS(meatshield), ballista is apllied because of their longranged shot. ATs are added because they shoot farther than ballista(applied to lev8 walls with lev9 archery only) 500 trebuchets are added because they'll take down the ballistas too, remember the more ATs and Trebuchets(Tr) the less troops you'll loose.
Here's the battle descriptions:
First round:Ballistas of both side tackle each other, archers takle each other, Ca move forward, meatshield is being attacked by AT and some Tr with some Ar.
Second round:defending Ba, AT and Tr were destroyed( according to the numbers above), 70% of defending Ar was destroyed, 12%-20% of Ca was destroyed, attacking Cav completely destroyed along with 40% attacking Ba, 70-89%Ar destroyed, meatshield was wiped out.Ca was still moving
3rd round-25th round:Ca reached the Ba and Ar remained, all defending Ar wiped out, 10-19% remaining Ca wiped out, 10% of Ba destroyed, 80% of remaining Ar destroyed. About 3000-6000 Ba standing, 15000-20000 Ar standing, 65000 Ca still on fire. After some more rounds, Ca completely destroyed the Ba and Ar remained......remained troops are 50000-54000 Ca alive

Now, each 10 Ca are made, 3 Ar and 1 Ba should be made also. That's the Perigrine rainbow.

my understanding of the battle mechanics is that the cavalry or cataphract in this case will skip all the meatshield units and head straight for the archers since they're usually the most expensive. Thats why when you hit lvl 10 valleys cavalry still kill your archers.

not really, if they all skip the meatshield, then rainbow wouldn't work on horsemen, and they do work on horsemen, the thing is there's a different between attacking a valley's troops and a player's city. In valley attacking, cavalry will skip through meatshield but not when you attack a player

Not sure of this. Defender archers gonna attack first attacker units in range and then they gonna attack the unit type which deal most dmg per round. I think in this case it gonna be pikemens, archers and the other units type(warriors and swordmens) will be wiped later. Cavalry/catas go straigh to the biggest threat, in this case, archers. Range units attack the first unit in range and then if they have the choice, they will attack the unit type which deal most dmg per round. The only effective rainbow against horsemen are horsemen, horsemen go straigh to the biggest threat.

How the battle gonna happen from my knowledge.

Attackers: Ar/Ba attack Ca. Sw/Cav move forward.
Defenders: Ar/Ba/Ats attack Cav. Ca move forward.

Attackers: Ar/Ba attack Ca. Cav attack Ca(if they survived). Sw move forward.
Defenders: Ar/Ba/Ats attack Ar/Ba. Ca attack Cav if Cav survived or attack Ba.

Attackers: Ar/Sw attack Ca. Ba/Cav died.
Defenders: Ar/Ba/Ats/Ca attacks Ar

Atackers: Ar/Ba/Cav died. Sw attack Ca.
Defenders: Ar/Ba/Ats/Ca attack Sw.

Attackers: defeat
Defensers: winner

Take note theses step are not rounds.

Having too much catas is not good. Its better having 35k catas/ 65k archers because the biggest threat for attackers are the archers. This give the oppurtinity to your Catas to attack attackers units with less casualties because they are not the biggest threat. With archers being the biggest threat, attackers units spend more time to get in range. Instead of being attacked all the battle, catas could be only attacked when they was the only target in attackers range.

the reason i build mostly cataphracts is the threat of the battering ram. Archers will decress the lost of Cataphract once they're in battle, the best number i perharps is 10 cataphract:3 archers: and 1 Ballista. In most battles, cataphract takes a lot of hits, with archers around, they reduced the number cataphracts die, but all archers will die in the defend if they are under 30k.Cataphract still takes lost, more or less, you still have your point

I guess 65k archers & 35k cataphracts tactic would work better because archers would then become the most valuable unit & take most of the fire while cataphracts will move, in 2 rounds they will reach opponents archers & in next few rounds they will finish off the opponents army.. Meanwhile archers on both sides will exchange fire turn by turn...

that's great,too, but the archers and the cataprhact must have a balanced unit to each other, you chose to do more archers, i chose to do more cataphract, they'll come in handy someday. But you're right, thanks for puting that in

You wanna be careful about that either way; horseback troops go for the highest-value as we all know, but seige units are higher value than archers...not too great for them to be rushin' at the rams/b'listers and givin' archers all thetime they need to lay waste to your ATs...

But what if there is an abatis or trap involved?

abatis has minimum effects on Cataphract, traps are not effective against them

Cav and 'phracts are both vulnerable to traps, but on very minor scales; and like any other troops, they can overwhelm then. So 100k cav against 1k traps will show virtually no losses; but that applies to warriors, too.

Its worth noting, since I was online at the time but powerless to stop it... Andante pulled this beautiful move off because of the speed of his prior attacks, which destroyed all pikes, swordsmen or warriors to defend the archers, which then got pummeled as if run over by 100k rams on overdrive. The hoof power here IS staggering, but throw 1 pike, 1 swordman and 1 warrior into the mix, and all ponies/phracts are dead. Its all about timing... and not giving your opponent ANY. ha. Good job, Andante. As I've blogged elsewhere on these forums... exquisite display.

(note: NEVER reinforce someone with pure archers, unless you want to cull your army!)

I absolutely love my army of cavalry but at the end of the day it has to be accepted that Archers do the trick better in most situations.
A wee piddly rainbow and you toss them outta the way, cav get slaughtered.
makin' a heavy timin' and clearin' the rainbow before the cavalry comes runnin' in works..but personally I wouldn't want my main archer army relyin' on the lives of a few wee pikes and swords...damn get pure thousands of them! Make sure they don't jus' have to warrior bomb you a few times to clear your rainbow.

Or hell, do what I do and jus' have some cav in the way of the archers. Heavy rainbows, cav, archers and ATs...fun stuff to attack...:rolleyes:

You're right at some points, why do you think the game left you with 2 kinds of dragoon? cavalry and cataphract is not for fun, they are used to support each other and tackle enemy's archers hiding behind the wal, they're much better than sending just archers with some different units- a rainbow. cataphract makes the battle 100% effective than archer. They are excelent for attackers, and defend, you don't need to worry about when you're in defend mode and hundred thousand of archers coming your way, cause once they recognize your city is filled with massive cataphracts and cavalries, they're strong enough to cause under 10k lost of unit, 2-3 times over, the enemies will stop their attacks because it's ussless.
This tactic is not for newbie, for if your cataphract is under 50k, you shouldn't be applying this tactic, because once your city is hit, your cataphract will take massive lost, in around 3-4 attacks, you'll lose everything.

You were right AT SOME POINTS

i think cavalry will take out the rainbow for cataphracts.
cavs have more speed, and more range, idoubt the catas will stop till they reach the archers.
either way this is a really interesting technique, one can send a big warrior bombto take out rainbows and use camp time to make the cav/cata hit land exactly after the war bomb. Dont forget that if there is too much time between the attack,s enemy can use medic and get some of his rianbow back and it ruins the cav/cata attack

that makes cavalry special, they work perfectly with cataphract

what about abatis? say 5k with lv 10 machinery. How are you going to clear those?

My one thing about this guide, is that it is common knowledge that using Cataphracts can destroy any Archers. It doesn't really take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

well all i know is if there are no (Battering Rams) in the equation if catahracts have max tech there is no combination of units if its 100k vrs 100k that can kill 100k cataphracts none zip zero not even catapults and ballistas nothing put together any units that equal 100k and send them against 100k cataphracts with max tech you lost not even 50k archer 50k cataphracts nothing 100k cataphracts win. especially if defending with wall defense support cant loose. Do the math I already did.

Did you also do the math on how much it costs to make 100k cataphracts, and how much food they need xD.
This is a great tactic, no debate about that, just the cost of it, and it applies in very tight conditions, It is extremely difficult to take down 500 abatis from an enemy, and it is also very costly to remove the enemy rainbow.
I actually want to know what other people do for the above, cuz you have to remove traps/abatis, and all enemy rainbow for this technique to work.

Dr, I don't send out phract armies (too costly) but I regulary send out cav armies. 100k cav hit 500 abatis and I lose 200 cav or less. That's .2% loss. If you sent phracts the loss is even less.

If I send waves, the first wave of about 10k removes most of the abatis, and 40 waves of 2k afterwards take less than 50 losses (abatis don't all get destroyed in one attack).

I left for 2 months. Whats the point of playing that server then? I play on s86 now.
