which are better for killing archers?

Cataphract is strong and tough, they're fast, great for killing archers all type of army execpt battering ram and catapult

That's not an easy question to answer. Both are good but based on seperate defenses. Both attacks require abatis and cavalry/cataphracts to be gone.

Cavalry are great for towers with gates closed and for about 100k archers. Cataphracts are best for large amounts of archers towers, like 350k+ with 13k towers. Cavalry takes advantage of speed and cataphracts of power.

With a good hero, these numbers change.

will they be able to tear through meat shield units in bulk? Eg 500k warriors

yes go look in your rally they have basic mechanics there and cata or cav aren't good for taking down archers towers you should use archers for that.
