It really depends what line of work you go into. If you were, for example, to become a waitress or something, then it would boil down to the restraunt/whatever you worked for, since some are more official than others.

Also depends on the type of tattoo. There are certain things that are generally considered offensive by a majority of people, and if you get something like that, no matter the location, it is unlikely someone would be eager to hire you.

I agree with Chino as well-- names are nice and all, and the people they are of generally are important to you, but you really never know when that will change. Not to put a pessimistic spin on relationships or anything. If you're going to get a tattoo on your body, then it should be a representation of you. You don't generally go and get your hair cut in the same style as someone important to you, or dye it the same colour, and a tattoo shouldn't be any different.

My first art I received was the word RISE on my laft calf. That tat was inspired by two songs, Rise by Pantera, and Rise by Bad Brains. One is an anti racist anthem and the other is a song about self awarness and perserverance. It was done by a close friend of mine who was apprenticing. It was his 2nd tattoo ever :eek:

My 2nd tat was the letters SHARP across my back. Those that know what that means are either with me or against me \m/

Societies views on tattoos in the States are easing. The rise of social conservatism post WWII brought in the demonization of tattoos. They wanted people to think that only the criminal mined or the rowdy blue collar/ military personel would get them. More and more you see people with visiable tattoos in positions that you would not have dared show tattoos 20 years ago. This is a good thing in my mind. The sociology of tattoos is a very rich one and the social conservatives of the past wanted to supress personal expression and wanted to shelter the kids from the world.

As stated before make sure the the art is something that means a lot to you. Not some spur of the moment cutsie thing or your favorite manga star or anything like that. Make it a piece that realates to your current position in your life, as tattos were once a mark of becoming an adult or accomplishing a significant task in your life. So you should probably keep that same thing in mind.

Lol lots of things have changed. Nose rings, for example, used to be markings of slavery in some cultures. Girls and guys are also wearing much different clothing and showing much more skin than they ever would have been able to way back when. But there are other reasons some people are against tattoos, some of which are unopen for discussion in evony.

Generally, it can be a good thing for some people. It's definitely not for everybody though. Often, I think people take tattoos way too lightly. It's not exactly like a piercing that generally barely leave any visible marks if you change your mind after getting one. That's why it's actually a bit of a relief to see threads like this since it's evidence that the person is actually trying to take into consideration all the possibilities about the tattoo.

There are times when people jump into it lightly thinking "Well it's my body and I'll do what I want with it and you can't stop me!" and in situations like that it can end up being more about defiance than anything, and that is just not healthy. Especially when people end up with tattoos that they either hate later, or are deliberately offensive to other people.

There are also the health aspects of it-- some people are allergic to the ink. Some people get infections. If you don't choose the tattoo artist/parlour carefully, you could end up gettin a dirty needle, and all the problems that would carry with it. If you have a low pain tolerance, you may not be able to handle having a large tattoo done-- definitely a consideration since you don't want to have to say stop halfway through. Despite lowering inhibitions, you still have a very likely chance of not being able to get a job at a certain facitility if you have a tattoo. The same applies to piercings, but since you can take piercings out they are generally more lenient than tattoos, which either have to be covered up or gotten rid of. And you can't necessarily blame the businesses that have such policies.

More freedom is good and all, but it always comes with more responsibility, and people really need to keep that in mind.

I do not think I even remotely endorsed going into the process without thinking about it seriously or that everyone should get a tattoo. I was just implying that past stereotypes of people with tattoos is slowly being destroyed. I do support the breaking down of walls and putting a stop to basing someones first impression soley on ones visual representations.

I do know about certian peoples beliefs in keeping their bodies pure and I whole heartedly believe that they have every right to believe that way. Also the people I am thinking of had nothing to do with the States past social conservative streak, they are perfectly happy keeping to themselves ;)

My final statement here is, that if somone makes a huge mistake on their choice of tattoos, could very well have that choice being the least of their worries, if they do things like semi-permantely changing their bodies image without serious consideration ;)

I will most likely end up being a teacher,so i dont know if it would be a huge deal to get one on my neck considering my english teacher had one on hers,but i will reconsider anyways just in case my teaching plan backfires..

Sure, there are probably a few out there that might do that, but you'll find the situation is generally very different the other way around.

I find it absolutely appalling that it is perfectly fine for businesses to essentially discriminate against a person that is perfectly qualified to do a particular job, simply because they enjoy body art.

Those same ppl will say, "oh, I don't mind if a person likes tatoos and such, but it just isn't professional to have them showing all over in the workplace." SAYS WHO??? Donald Trump? You?

To that end, I'd simply like to add that I'd rather buy a car from someone that greets me on the lot wearing a comfortable t-shirt and jeans with tats from head to toe that says to me, "down to earth", than an uptight stiff wearing a suit who oozes "fake".

As infuriating as all of this is, it is simply a fact that you are going to have to think about where you get your tatoos, because they can get in the way of you being able to get some jobs or advance as you deserve in other cases.

I have tattoos and hired and fired many people, if someone came to me for a job one of the first things you must consider in the hiring process is appearance. So, if they had tattoos sticking out all over the place that makes a difference, or just one inappropriate one showing, that also makes a difference.

I wasn't trying to selectively quote you. o.o It just seemed like a space saver to quote only the part of your message that was related to what I was talking about. :s The tattoos you have, and what they represent, wasn't really relevant to what I was saying since I wasn't addressing your tattoos on a personal level. :s

For not basing on visuals, considering tattoos are generally claimed to be a representation of something the person who has them likes, it is actually fundamentally important that they play a role in first impressions. That's why, when you get the tattoos, it's important you consider the impressions that they give others. Although, yes, it probably is a good thing people are more free to do what they want, like I said with that comes a great deal more responsibility. If you don't take that responsibility, you have to face the consequences-- one of which is that people can and will judge the ways you choose to present yourself. Tattoos and piercings included.

Lol well yes, if someone gets a tattoo without thinking about it, there is a sort of "you got what you deserved" aspect to it, but that's why I think it's all the more important to place emphasis on these things before it comes to that. Overall I think I understand what you're getting at, though, and I wasn't trying to argue with you about it. :)

Hmm... well for a teacher, it would depend both on the location of the tattoo and the level of teaching you're at.

If you teach in preschool, chances are parents aren't going to be overly interested in having someone with a tattoo showing in an obvious fashion at any particular location on their body. If you plan on being a high school teacher or some such, things would be a bit different and more laid back i think, though you still would be unlikely to land a job if you walk in with your body completely covered. I think, though, so long as you got something unoffensive and unobtrusive (or in an easily covered place such as your back/back of your neck/ankle/upper arm (if you like wearing long sleeves) you'd probably be ok. I'd suggest staying away from things like skulls with knives through them though (though I don't think that's really what you had in mind). o.O

Honestly I don't think it's a matter of looking down on anyone. And yes, actually, people that get tattoos do in fact look down on people with out them on occassion. It's not a one-sided thing.

And I don't actually find it that apalling that some people consider it unprofessional. If a person shows up to work wearing body paint for their favourite team colours, nobody would consider that to be professional behaviour, but if someone were to get those colours placed upon their skin permanently you expect people to view this differently...?

Tattoos are intended to be a personal expression more than anything. Business is generally intended to be formal and impersonal.

Is that necessarily 100% fair? no, not really. But people know that when they get tattoos. And honestly, I have to admit I would generally feel more comfortable doing business with someone whose face I could see than with someone who was absolutely hidden beneath ink (though, I'm sorry, but I find it ironic that you compared having tattoos to being real). Unless I knew the person with the tattoos very well.

I think that's another reason why especially facial tattoos can give the wrong impression since they do sort of act like a mask. Our minds aren't exactly capable of thinking of things in terms of tattoos without effort. We can see the skin, the colour it is, and we generally have a basic rule where when another colour begins our minds typically associate as being not skin. It takes a lot more conscious thought to think of a tattoo as actually being part of the skin, and it is distracting. Well, i find it to be anyway lol

I did not want to incite an "argument", but the part you selected was used to make it sound like I endorsed everyone getting tattoos no matter what they are just to stick a middle finger up at society. Well at least that is how I interpreted the quote and that is totally not what I intended. But the tattoos I listed as having are examples of how someone thinks about what they are putting on their body, how they mean something to them, and that I did not get them without thinking about them. I believe that was a very improtant part of the post. I just had to reinforce that I do not supprt haphazard tattoos and that I do not support the discrimination that tattos sometimes bring on.

Yes if someone has a swastika tattooed on their head or a dotted line around their neck with the words 'cut here' in the middle of said lines along the throat (yes I have personally seen both of these tattoos on real people) I would not begrudge someone for not hiring them. I would not condone someone not getting a job becusue they have a buttefly tattooed on their wrist, or a ring tattooed around their left ring finger ;), I would not condone the requirement for someone to cover up a forarm wrap unless everyone was required to cover up both of their forearms, and I definately would not require someone with tattoos coming out around their collar to wear a god awfull turtle neck.

Yes, a tattoo should represent something about you, but once again you can not judge a book by it cover at all times, so unless something is as offensive as the two tats I listed above, there should be no problem with the tat you choose. I beleive it has come to a time where society needs to relalize that certain skin art, although not pretty/attractive, are not outrightly offensive just because one one would not get it put on themselves.

If someone comes in to get hired and they are all dirty and smell bad then yes you can tell that they are someone that does not know how to take care of themselves hygenically; therfore they probably would not make a good employee. But judging someone for a passive tattoo they have on their body is just plain ridiculous, because the only thing you can tell about that person from them having a tattoo is that they are the type of person that would get a tattoo :rolleyes: In that type of situation the person has a problem with the culture of tattoos not the individual. I say this because they have no clue what the art means, except for tats like the two I listed above. So again, using tattoos as the sole reason to not hire someone is discrimination in my book. If I had my S.H.A.R.P tat open for viewing, and unless you know what S.H.A.R.P. means, then you should not use that as a basis to not hire me. If you are not sure of what the tattoo means then ask and then if the message does not mesh with your buisness then by all means do not hire the person, but tattos have been a part of human culture for thousands of years and people need to get over some of their own insecurities and stop projecting them onto others.

So in conclusion, if you are willing to shove down your throat what the tattooed cook puts on your plate at a resturant then you should have no problem with a tatted out brain surgeon going into your cranium.

P.S. I work for a Physical Rehabilitation Hospital, potentially the top in the south-east US, and the tattoo on my calf is displayed daily and they have not tried to get rid of me yet :D So yes I think atttitudes about tattoos have changed for the better, but I think that people still need to loosen up a bit.
