Darkbrady, would you say cataphracts are more worth it than cavs? Should there be a bigger cat army than cav? Or is the extra cost not worth the benefit? What would a good combination of troops be (in terms of numbers of different troop units)?

Hi, thank you for the information provided above.I have a question. How do I upgrade from civilian to knight ?
This reallly isn't the place for that.
All the requirements are on the quest list. You'l mainly need medals which drop from attackin' valleys.
'Phracts are the kings of combat. There is no better overall unit to attack with. They're fast, strong, have a lot of life, can take a hit and skip through enemy's optimum archer range quickly. It's ideal.
As next to regular ponies you probably want both. They do the same job, but 'phracts are for the bigger, more intense battle, whereas ponies are for smaller, lighter battles that don't require the heavy hitters yet.
Havin' both HB units in good number is the best thing you can do if you're goin' to attack people a lot.
If you're defencive and expect to receive more attacks than send out, then either prepare to send your HB army elsewhere or don't build one; they're pretty terrible in defence. Archers and foot troops are your men to defend your homeland.
This is one of the best guides I have seen. Much better for the more advanced players. Send JPA32 a PM and put this into the library of guides.
On a personal note, I believe the most effective attack with 100k troop cap would be this:
2k scouts, Swords, Pike, Cavalry, Phracts, for layering, then 35k Rams and 40k Archers. With the remaining 15k troops you put in Catapults and Ballistas. The Rams go ahead and take up all of the damage, while your archers hack away at other archers(also taking up all damage from ranged units), while your deadly Ballistas, and Catapults get into range. IMO, this is the best way to send a 100k wave.
the rams go ahead and take up all of the damage? the rams wont reach the "damage" till the fight is over lol.
hey darkbrady, was just wondering if you could tell me what happened here?
battle35.evony.com/default.html?logfile/20091021/dd/5b/dd5b53f894e4ef875f7e686994296873.xml

Scouts will only layer if there's no traps/abati.
2k of each unit is about 1,500 troop slots wasted.
Where are your workers and warriors? They're layers too.
The raams will be passed by everythin'...there'll be no layers left by the time the raams get in range of damage.
Your archers will effectively be unlayered and the prime target of enemy attacks, makin' them the first to die and with it, a great waste of 40k troop slots.
The b'listers and cata's move too slowly....by the time they got anywhere useful there'd be nothin' else on the field and they'd get ganked.
There's no "be all and end all" wave...it's all situational.
95k 'phracts with scouts and ponies sounds good, but if there are traps/abati then the scouts become useless and the 'phracts get wasted early.
110k raams and layers sounds nice until you realsie the enemy has 750k archers.
You gotta jus' pick and choose as and when needed.
@colliver: you deleted the report so I can't see it.
You keep arguing that 'phracts are the best attacking unit, when clearly, battering rams are =P I guess we could discuss that to judgement day =P
oh thta sucks, probably would have been a good 1 for you guide 2
thanks anyway
I jus' used examples...I used a raam example too! D:
And it's on the Raam vs 'Phracts thread...I think it probably all comes down to a personal choice and situational evidence.
Different players and different playstyles in different situations will call for different tactics, but folk are gunna tend to side towards one over the other. Everyone's always gunna prefer one over the other, really..I'm jus' one of the ones who prefers 'phracts.
Sayin' that...foot troops own everyone, everywhere!
