Usually the 'truth' in legends and folklore is related to the nature of ourselves and how we see the world, or how we should treat each other.

You misunderstand; I'm not askin' what the original myth of the creature was; I'm askin' how the myth was devised, and where it can be derived from in the natural, scientific world.
Back then they didnae jus' come up w/ stories for the sake of a bedtime read to the kids; all the stories were really believed; it was real to them. There wasnae some guy who jus' sat and decided on some monster that Belsariuos would slay the next day; there was a reason that the story says he slew a goat/dragon/snake/eagle thing...I'm wonderin' what that was based on.
The earliest image of a chimera that I could find.

One thing I noted is that all the descriptions are of a female creature. Sorry I am not that familiar with Greek mythology. Funny how the images of creatures can change so much.

Because it is ridiculous, if you will pardon me.
To see the origin of the myth you have to understand Greecian story telling. A man would walk from city to city telling stories for money.
This man would make a story, and every telling he would make the monster more ferocious and dangerous. Eventually it gets to ridiculous, so it reverts to equilibrium. This equilibrium is the Chimera.
