The originator of the Nobel prize was Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite who saw the potential for loss of life from his invention and wished to do something as a form of recompense to humanity.
Similar feelings were experienced by the scientists who worked on the first nuclear bombs in the U.S.A.. Unfortunately, the government had control of their invention and none were ever able to offer anything similar to the Nobel prize. The U.S. government remains the only government to have ever used a nuclear weapon as a weapon of war.
