Oh, I went to the same junior school as the son of the drummer from Def Leopard, and the fastest person in the north of England at under-15's was in my PE class :p
As far as area and city history goes, I think mine tops all of you, with a quite a few famous people from around this way too (I don't think you yanks will know most of them :P, but some are internationally known).
Anyway, I cba to paste the famous people bit, so I'll just give you a little knowledge.
I live in Portsmouth, England. As a site, it is the oldest naval base in Britain, the UK's only island city. 13th most densely populated area in Europe, 2nd in the UK. The most fortified city in Europe, due to it's naval significance. Home to Charles ****ens, H.G. Wells, Sir Isambaard Kingdom Brunel, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and Peter Sellers.
If you have a spare half hour, read the wiki :P, It's quite an important and well known town. And it's also a ****hole. :)

Where's that then?
I went to the same high school as both Belinda Carlisle and Heather Locklear (although they are both older than I am and I never knew them), and before that I went to school about 15 km from the world's largest particle accelerator.
Currently, all I got is the stuff Abracax already posted. Still pretty cool, though. Oh, and we have our own Ghosthunters group here, and they have LOTS of stuff to check out in the area. It's one of those areas where if you start a talk about hauntings, everyone says "Oh yeah, my house is haunted. So what?" lol
