wich version of the story do you know?

Interestingly enough 'Fairy Stories' weren't orignally written for children and some were quite 'explicit' in nature and overtime were made suitable for children.
The changing of stories has been perpetrated even further by Hollywood who in some instances even to the point of changing history U-571 for example.
Whilst fiction can cause disillusionment if should be made clear to children that these are stories that show how we would like it to be rather than how it is. I would hate to live in a 'Fahrenheit 451' society devoid of fantasy or escapism, it just has to be kept in perspective.
We are all in search of our own happy endings, some find them some don't, some may not even recognise them for what they are. Others may find them but be prevented for various reasons from attaining them at the time but there is always the hope that circumstances may change and make them attainable. From the male perspective some may aspire to be the Knight on the white charger but end up settling for slightly tarnished armour.

"happy endings" are made. not found, that was the point of the good stories. and as my husband is found of pointing out "happily ever after" doesnt happen till your dead.

Well I would argue that point, I found a potential happy ending quite by chance when I wasn't trying to make one or even looking for it - there are obstacles but eventually they could be overcome. As for your husband's observation he needs to take a look around, there are happy ever afters everywhere but some blind themselves with such cynicism about their own lives that they fail to see the joy in others (case in point although no longer with us actor James Stewart happily married to the same person for over 45 years (I think)).

The fairy tales don't encourage this idea much though; they give to kids the impression that no matter what happens, it will all pan out in the end. Who cares what you do, say, think or where you go, becasue no matter what you cause you'll get the girl, beat the baddy, find a shiny castle and live happily ever after.

I mean...how often does that actually happen in real life?
Not very often, for sure...

Happy endings are ficticious, only in fairy tales.

Speaking as someone who grew up with Hans Christian Anderson's version of The Little Mermaid where she perishes and becomes nothing more than foam on the rocks while her prince marries some other girl and lives "happily ever after," I'd have to agree with the OP. Instead of moving on and learning from the unfair happenings of the real world, we've more psychos and generally disturbed people. Way to go Disney. Way. to. Go.

If you've ever been to Disneyland and seen the parade... "If you believe your dreams will come true." Not bloody likely.

I just saw a commercial for "A Christmas Carol".

Starring Jim Carrey.

Now, it might just be me, but it seems an awful lot like they've taken that classic, dark tale, and decided to make it "Fun for the whole family!".

Is this not a facepalm moment? I mean god damnit. This is ridiculous. A comedian as Mr. Scrooge, in the best and only Christmas story worth reading.

This is perfectly demonstrates the point here. The slaughtering of a perfectly good story for the sake of a dollar.

Actually it looks pretty accurate (the movie). I might see it- that animation is really very good.

the only way i can accept "a Christmas Carol" as a comidy is the way the muppits did it.

Its dark for a christmas story. Which isn't the point.

Its an atrocity to take such a classic tale, and twist it, pervert it for the sake of a dollar.

I'm not even sure I'm cool with the way the muppets did it. Although they did a decent job with Treasure Island.

at least the muppets had Dic kins and his wonderful naritve, thats why i like that one.

If any of you have children that are sports oriented you too see what a tragedy society is putting on the childrens minds today. In case you don't, what happens at all childrens sporting events (that I have been to) is that every child recieves a trophy for whatever they did! I believe this is totally wrong. What will the World be like 30 years from now when they all don't get rewarded for what they have done??

technicly Jill didnt die, the rhyme ends befor you find out

Jack cracked his head open, so it doesn't matter.

I am guessing you haven't read the original Charles D. Story.

The story is very much intact in all its tellings- because it was written as a play immediately after it was produced. Things that started off as tales on the other hand, like the little mermaid, ended up warped because of the fact they didn't have an actual script.

Also, the script of the new Christmas Carol has been written by the writer of Forrest Gump. So it is probably less boring than the original.

it was? i didnt know that. i know he wrote it for a news paper becuse he was flat broke. and that he had to make sure the ppl didnt think the the reasion it was in a paper was that he had lost his ability.

Actually, Scrooge is somewhat humorous at points. He says things that are old English styles of humor.

that does not mean that he is a char that you can ridicule. there is a big difrance between being witty and being ridicluous

Jus' makes me think of the movie "Idiocracy"...

I mean, as much as that was meant as a satire, it's terrifyin' how close it lands to reality as each year passes...

Lol, it was also old english humor. Dark for us Disney washed americans.

I laughed at scrooge when I was young, and I laughed at the Disney version. Scrooge is meant to be laughed at to be a more acceptable miser. After all, look at all the jokes about misers in every culture. For instance, he stuck a quarter between his butt cheeks and got 2 dimes and a nickel. It is a way for you to like scrooge in the end after he has changed instead of still thinking he is such a horrible person.

Don't get me wrong...I do laugh at Scrooge myself. I guess it's more the mindset when either reading or watching the umpteen goodness remakes of it. *shrugs* Depending on how it's done, I also laugh at the line I mentioned.
