Impossible? No. Difficult? Yes. I would honestly recommend a good alliance. Beyond security, there are a lot of benefits and pleasures provided by a good alliance that you simply cannot get alone. Why bypass one of the best parts of the game?
Actually it is is fairly easy to survive on your own but you have to use a different play style.
Understand that you will never ever be able to catch up to the top players in prestige, honor, cities, etc. The game mechanics have been refined to ensure that new players have to spend money in order to advance to a state where older players are at. Even still, once these new players reach that state they usually quit since the game is pretty boring.
So to avoid all that mess and still have fun, change your play style to that of an antagonistic annoyance byt using the game mechanics to your advantage. First off, only use 1 city as no one can take it from you. Second build enough warehouses to hold enough food to allow you comfort for 3 days. Third, build scouts and hire heroes to go and take high level valleys from other players.
Now sit back and watch as stupid players send waves of attacks at you that do nothing. Comfort every 15 minutes and send mails to the attackers telling them how foolish they are. Go attack their offline alliance mates' valleys. Abandon those valleys and turn them into level 1s. Send attacks with 1 slow unit that takes several hours so the flashing bird is constantly going and they won't know who else is attacking them.
Griefing people in games like this is actually the true 'end game'. Trying to play it 'their' way will only cost you money and waste your time.
wow, is it that bad?
