In urban areas of China, only one child is allowed. Rural areas are not subject to the law. Also, it does not have to be a boy.
However, the heads of families prefer a masculine child if they are to have only one heir. This has created a general disdain for female babies. If a fetus is discovered to be female, and the family strongly wants a boy, then they will choose not to bring that child to term and try again until they get a boy.
