Religion. Wha?

I'm going to say it straight. I'm a complete, 101% atheist. If you really really hate and/or dispise me and fellow atheists, please don't read this thead. It may burn, blow up, stab, rip up, curse at, and make fun of your eyes.:D

So, I was watching tv one day, and a religious comercial came up. It was taking about satan, god, saviors, blah blah blah...and so on. And then, a thought popped up into my head. *light bulb* Ding! I wondered why there was religion in the first place? whos the idiot 4000 or so years ago who said, "Hey! I think theres a white guy with a beard in the sky who decides what to do with humans like a kid with a magnifying glass on an ant hill! Lets worship him!". Really, why even care? Your born, you grow up, get a partner( and i'm not saying the word "married" because thats also from religion), make babies, get even older, and die. Theres absolutely no need to put santa clause or the easter bunny in there.

Please tell me why mankind has made religion. Even your opinion.:)

In my opinion, religion was created so that people would calm down before they die. They like to know there's someplace they'll go after death.

Plus it provided a quick answer to hyper-philosophical questions like "Why does the world exist?".

lol where did that come from? :D I don't think you're a degenerate lowlife (not least of all because we appear to have the same political persuasion). I just find it kinda weird someone is bored at the computer. open a book/magazine, use google images and google the third, sixth, nineth and twelfth words, get lost in the whole clicking on endless interesting images or stories, and you'll find you've wasted two or more hours. :P Failing that... start a war on here (the game, not the forums)... or if one already... another one. :)

Oh, and its fine with me if you want to talk about religion (coz I'm not a mod and don't have the ban hammer). I'm sure the Turin shroud, real birthdate, multiple authors, etc. will be discussed, like 99.999% of threads on the same subject. I could write a playbook for how the thread would appear, its that formulaic. Maybe I'm just old and have seen too much and too many. :P

lol, true. I do get a sad sort of glee from writing my side of the formulaic playbook in a discussion with someone who has never seen it before.

With all due respect to the OP, we do state very clearly in the forum rules that we don't allow political or religious discussions. The reasons, of course, became patently obvious rather quickly in this thread, don't you think? Religion is a very touchy subject that can invoke very strong emotions and while a nice passionate debate is fun and healthy, we run the risk of truly upsetting too many people and bringing about flaming if we allow these topics.
