People have been making them with things like photoshop, paint, and gimp.

its a popular free picture editing program...alot of my GFX members from my old forum used it
Try using Paint, simple and easy for beginners. Move on to GIMP for mediocre then Photoshop for experts, like myself :]].
(I could make you one. PM me with what you want and what you would like ti to say...)
Paint Shop Pro deserves a mention. Its like Photoshop but more user-friendly. I've been using it for over 10 years, and its more than equipped for what you'd be using it for. v7 was the best, fyi.

No, its not free. If you want a free program, definitely go with GIMP - open source, and very powerful. Its beginning to rival Photoshop - it just has a lot of catching up to do in terms of plug-ins, since Photoshop has like... 2.8 trillion by now. lol

Yes, GIMP works with Vista, and XP.. probably even the likes of ubuntu. Thanks re: my signature. I've made about 50, most of which sit unused on my drive. I had a few of my female members looking for warrior-type signatures, so I went through a gazillion possibilities. Here are a few unused ones:

Try to edit your post and append rather than posting multiple posts consecutively. :) Also, please remove the image from your post. I revised the image to take out two signatures which might be too racy for some of our younger players. Yes, you can't select just one, because its a single, whole image. You can just copy into an image editor and crop the signature you're referencing... takes about 8 seconds. :)
I personally prefer Seashore. It's a somewhat... different drawing and image manipulating program. It doesn't have all of the fancy effects of Photoshop or Gimp, but it's got loads of features you'd never see anywhere else.
It works well for my purposes, which are mainly MTG cards and my sigs.

Gimp is pretty unstable, especially on Vista and especially when you start adding plug ins. I tried it for a little while but I found myself going back to Irfanview more often than not.
gimp has had me confused for a while..and i cannot use those pics that i edited for any sigs...<----thats not so great...
Try Irfanview. It's free to download and has cropping and resizing functions to get the sig to the right size. (maximum size is 450 pixels wide x 150 pixels high) It also has a basic text adding function.

The Only reason i know how to use gimp is because i was accepted into a summer academy about making games. The game designers used gimp so thats how i know. If you were to go to www.gimp.org it would give you all the basics.
the problem is now i cant use those files still...they are bitmap files and i cannot use them, it says invalid file...so what do i do now?
When you save the images you should be able to choose to save them as jpeg files.
Bmp images stay more crisp when you are manipulating them, that's why the default is bmp but it's simple to swap them to jpeg.
I use a combination of photo editing software.Each of these have there different strong /weak points.My favorite for the type of project you are working on is NeoPaint.Google Neosoft and they will offer you a free trial download.This site also offers Neobook.A very good publisher for Internet related design and publication.
Photoshop,Photosuite and Photosuite vista offers are available and are good for file conversion.This helps when you get the message
"invalid file type" I own and use all of these.
I believe the problem with these programs hanging has to do with allocating memory.If I initiate the program before logging into Evony I have no problem.When trying to access after Evony or other browser/flash based application is innitiated I have memory errors.
