Tonight, I noticed the moon was a deep yellow.
Sometimes it's pink in my area. But, that's because of the nearby Owen's Corning Fiberglass factory. The sky gets pink at night, sometimes. I used to see a lot of yellow moons at my old home in a much more urban setting. The smog from the city created a veil of yellow to tint the night sky.
Right after a cold front moves in and a fresh wind has blown the pollution away, the moon can be incredibly bright white. It's almost another sun lighting up the deepest night to a near twilight glow. You don't even need a flashlight to walk through the woods.
Wow, Rota, sometimes you just amaze me. I'm not even laying a sarcastic tone within my text.
There's a reason the Hubble telescope gets incredible images we could have never achieved before. It is not encumbered by our atmosphere. Think of the atmosphere as window we have to look through to see the universe. If the moon is a color, it's because the lens we are viewing it through has been tinted by something... usually smog or a pollutant of some kind.
I know that even before the industrial age a lot of port towns could get bizarre colored moons. The saltwater made for a lot of salty chemicals in the air, like chlorides and sodiums. There would be a greenish tint from all the salts in the water vapor hanging in the air.
There was a lunar eclipse on December 22 and partial eclipses will be occurring over the next few nights. The moon will have a rosy glow as it rises.
