Welcome to the Dictionary Of Off Topic (And Other Relevant Things), here I shall explain the many terms and concepts used in Off Topic. While I will try to cover as much as possible that is not a guarantee that this is all inclusive. If there is something that is missing and you believe that you can write a good definition for it then please Private Message me the definition so I can consider it for conclusion (you will get credit of course).

I plan on alphabetizing this dictionary once I have amassed a fair amount of definitions

Lets Begin!

Thread
A thread is a conversation on the forums. For Example, some threads include "The Kings Bar" and "Off Topic Dictionary"


The concept of "In Before The Lock" is based on the fact that a thread that breaks rules is not locked from new posts immediately and people can post until it is locked by a moderator. People will try to get a post into the thread before it gets locked by saying the phrase "in before the lock" or displaying a picture or animation that conveys the same message.

Necromancing
Necromancing, more commonly refered to as necroing, is the act of posting a reply to an old thread thus bringing it back to the top of the list of threads. Necromancing is frowned upon and may result in an infraction if the thread hasn't been posted to for a certain amount of time.

MULTI
Multi refers to additional accounts created by forum users. Multis can be used for a variety of reasons including backup accounts, sockpuppeting(bad), and even ban evasion(very bad).
Multis may also be referred to as ALTs

Spam
Spam refers to short and/or pointless messages posted to a thread. Spam can also refer to messages posted on the forum for the purpose of solicitation.

Flaming
Generally the purposeful (But not always) and unnecessary insulting of another forum-user.

Bump
Bumping is the act of posting to a thread solely to move it back to the top of the list of threads

IRL
IRL is an acronym for "In Real Life"

Trolling
Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning. When done to uptight people such as fundies, this can result in hilarity.

Ban hammer
The Ban hammer is a figure of speech referring to the banning of a forum user.

Derail
To throw a thread completely off topic by means of illusion or direct reference to another subject in no relation to the current one. Derailing can lead to long conversations or can turn into mindless spam, which is why it is often refered to as such. Derailing is frowned upon and may lead to infractions and thread closure.

To write a statement far too superior for mere human's to breach concept.

To close a thread abruptly, named after the famed ex-moderator who had such a tendency. May soon be synonymous with "Wildor".

A laughable noob.
