Thread: The price of lumber.

  1. #1

    Default The price of lumber.

On one server its 30 per unit yet on another server its as much as 50 per unit.

    Why such a big difference?

In the cities that I need lumber its expensive but where I don't need it, its cheaper.

I suspect some sort of price fixing by the people that run the game.

You have to love conspiracy theories. Yes they are out to get you (and only you) and force you spend money.
The reality is that market prices are set by supply and demand. When demand is greater than supply, prices will rise. When supply is greater than demand prices will fall. It's basic economics. Add to that the inflationary impact of unlimited gold supply and no gold sinks and you have the foundations for the types of prices that you are seeing.

    Default Supply and demand

Conspiracy theories aside, it is an interesting question. I've been playing for a few months now and I have little reason to buy resources. I'm sure that most of the players in my alliance are in the same boat. NPC farming takes care of my resource needs (aside from what I produce). Every now and then, if I've accumulated a bunch of gold, I may buy some food--mostly to get rid of excess gold. I can't imagine that market demand is high enough to justify the high resource prices. As for supply, there are farms everywhere you look--it just seems like at a certain point in the game, as people gain the ability to farm more efficiently, supply increases which should lower demand.

However, the prices keep going up as if resources are scarce.

Farming npc's will only yield so much and ambitious players are always short on iron and lumber. It doesn't matter how old the server is, as long as there are active players there will always be a high demand for lumber and iron.

These are the prices on server 6 at the moment:
    Stone; 0.2
    Food; 10
    Iron; 32.5
    Lumber; 39

Prices will fluctuate a little through the course of the day but only slightly.

    3 words: Economies of Scale.

Prices will tend to trend downward as servers age.

That's not really true. Mainly because there are no goldsinks in the game so there is a lot more gold in play on older servers than on newer servers. With no way of removing that gold from the game server you just end up with hyper-inflation.

Personally I think it would be a good idea to have some kind of gold sink to get rid of this excess gold. A way to buy coins for gold is the first thing that comes to mind. Or even pay for holiday mode with gold. If you set the gold to coin rate high enough it would not have much affect on purchases of coins but would add an extra way for players to get items. As coins are server specific it wouldn't affect the newer servers as much, until players were able to accumulate large amounts of gold, which would be later in the server life. It might even be enough enticement to keep players playing longer.

The exchange rate could be anything, but perhaps around 10 million gold/coin would be fair.

    LOLWUT?!

With no effective goldsinks (as Rodri mentioned) there will only be inflation. No economy of scale effects will outpace the inflation effect of the glut of currency growing on every server. The only price that trends downward is stone because there is almost ZERO use for it after level 10 walls. Maybe the game needs some stonesinks too.

I actually like this idea, but considering that some players will have billions of gold at times and that if you sell 1mil wood, you can get massive amounts of gold, 10mil gold/ coin might not work. 100mil gold perhaps but thats still a bit low imo.

There's really no fair way to implement a gold-for-cents program, or gold-for-items. It's unfair depending on what server you play on. Each server has varying amounts of gold, thus varying amounts of average wealth. You can't implement a program like that and be fair across servers. You could also cast aside those concerns and just implement it. Then the old servers will by billions of cents, while new servers just get a few thousand.
