    Default A cold world......

I walked past a elderly person in a restruant today. She was so lonely sitting there trying to blow on the hot soup that layed in front of her.
A few mins later her purse fell, It layed there for nearly 20 mins as she finished her soup, I simply had enough and got up from my seat and raised her purse to her, She shook trying to stand up and flashed a smile...That moment touched me.

But for the thought that at least 30 people were in the area of that purse and did not bother to pick it up had me wondering...

Should America learn to treat the elderly better and with new respect?
It seems that elderly people are typically forgotten by exept for love ones.
Is there a way America can help fix this problem?

Society has become deformed, man. Only way to bring back respect is to enforce it.

I agree, i think they need to have some kind of laws in place to ensure that elderly people get some kind of respect.

There are always going to be selfish and mean people in this world. i bet some were afraid to pick it up for her because somebody might make fun of them. But it's good you had the courage to do that.

    Eleanor Rigby (Lennon/McCartney)

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
    Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
    Who is it for?

    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
    All the lonely people
    Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
    No one comes near.
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
    What does he care?

    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
    All the lonely people
    Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
    Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
    No one was saved

    All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
    All the lonely people
    Where do they all belong?

I don't mean to be cruel or a mean bish but, I don't think respect should be expected,
Respect needs to be earned. I think what your talking about is more along the lines of being
kind and caring, and in society theres always going to be the non-genourous, non-carers,
but there is ALWAYS someone willing to help, and someone willing to give up their seat.

Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough
    I don't know why
Keep making me laugh, Let's go get high
The road is long, we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime

I agree, Gottibabe. It's like you can't just expect a reward for a good deed, you have to be earned.

Respect shouldn't be earned, it should be an implicit part of any human interaction. Now, if you are dealing with a person who has proven themselves to you in the past as being a turkey, then factor that into your interaction accordingly. But interactions should start with respect. I teach high school, and I see a lot of kids who give no respect to any adult on campus, and hide behind the excuse of "respect has to be earned". But that's not reality. If I met your grandmother, I'd be respectful to her even if that was our first interaction.

Common courtesy has gone downhill in recent generations.

Let me share some advice that my father taught me...
No matter where you go, or what you do, take time to acknowledge the least of us.

When I say "lesser" I do not mean people that are actually worth less than others. I just mean people that are perceived to be lower on the social totem pole. In my youth, when I went to work with my dad, I saw this lesson in practice. He would acknowledge his superiors with curt respect. But, he would stop and chat for just a moment or two with the janitors, the secretaries, and anyone who was near the bottom on the "authority" scale at his office. Consequently, even though he was lower management, he was king of the building. Not a soul in that building did not cherish and respect my father as a co-worker, even though his contribution to the company was small.

So that is my advice. Treat the janitors and clerks etc... of this world like kings. You will see rewards in the end.
