Thread: Some Units are Useless

    Default Some Units are Useless

Just looking for opinions about what folks think are the most useless units. Personally I find cavalry to be useless. They're a magnet for every other troop type and get wiped out almost to the man. Archers are the key.

Transporters come second. They are slow and despite their large hauling capacity are inferior to workers. I just scrapped all my transports.

Yeah cavs definitely suck, altho they are good to take out abatis when a city u want is to far to conquer with real troops.

However u r wrong about transporters. They are not inferior to workers. when u attack with 90 or 100k troops, do you want half of them to be workers? i think not. also when you start attacking npc's, you also don't want to use workers. Workers are really only good for transferring resources back and forth and building cities.

once you get transporters, workers are almost useless. the capacity/food consumed ratio is outrageously better, and they're almost as fast as workers, which are danged slow.

once I get swordsmen, I'm not sure what pikemen are good for....

Default What am I missing about Transports?

Do they attack or merely bring back the plunder. I'll admit I did not whip out the calculator and did not factor in food (I produce so much of it that it's not an issue) but it still seems the cost factor is better with workers. Transports slow the army down tremendously on the march. (Workers too, but not as much.)

workers 200 load for 2 food speed 180

trans 5000 load for 10 food speed 150

some people would say that if you have lots of excess food, your army isn't big enough.

Load wise, transports carry 25 times more.
In the time it takes to make one transport you can only make 18.6 workers.
For the resource cost of one transport you can only make 10 workers.

Therefore transports are better both in time to load and cost to load ratios. Another positive is that it takes up a considerably smaller portion of you army. With a maxed out rally spot and war ensign, the max troops you can send in one wave is 125k, why waste 25k of that on workers when 1k transports achieve the same thing.

The only downside is the minor reduction in speed, and it is just that, minor.

My opinion of the most useless unit is the ram. Sure they're supposed to defeat the walls of your opponent, but since you only need about 2200 warriors (maxed military tradition) to breach a level 10 wall (maxed engineering), with the hero's attack stat not factored in, why bother? Hopefully some stuff gets fixed, and this changes.

Calvary are great at eliminating archers that don't have any support. Other than that situation, calvary die too quickly and easily for their cost/upkeep. Same goes for cataphracts. Er, maybe use them as an additional troop layer in combat?

Cavalry are great for medal raiding.

Taking another look at the transport. Opinion unchanged on cavalry. I just ran an exercise and the addition of cavalry simply wiped them out without changing the outcome.

I trust the exercise function as much as I use money to clean myself with. I was in a battle in which exercise said I needed half of the archers I sent (nothing else needed) when I sent more and lost 500-1000 archers.

Cavalry and Cataphract do not get used as they are targeted by all and don't have enough defense. You use one per attack for layering attacks. Second, have you ever found a spot with no defense or no fortifications and minimal defense? Cavalry love to take the resources. I have not sent Cavalry en mass except with my few Cataphracts I do have.

Pikemen are useful against Cavalry and Cataphract. I have 1,000 defending with each section of my army and I have a swordsmen meat shield as they are supposedly good against archers.
Writing for me is difficult. I often over think and write in ways where people become confused. If only I could write as well as I can look at data and draw conclusions from the data.
