I've seen way to many 'trolling' references that show an utter lack of education, so I'll share some wisdom:

TROLL, VERB: to fish for or in with a moving line, working the line up or down with a rod, as in fishing for pike, or trailing the line behind a slow-moving boat.

this is the root of the word troll as it applys to internet forums.

did you catch that? Trolling means "fishing" not "being an ugly fantasy character with warts, who lives under a bridge" A person could troll a thread, or be trolling but they are a troller not a troll.

Too many posts needed this clarification:

Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning. When done to uptight people such as fundies, this can result in hilarity.

I do know. It came from the English word TROLL, as i explained earlier. You may think that there is some "new" definition of the word but there isn't. "Trolling" internet forums fits the definition of trolling that was posted, You either 1. made a definition of trolling up in your head based on the only definition of the word "troll" you knew or 2. you believed someone else who did #1. (skirata) When you're trolling, your "baiting" people to bite into your arguement. You're "fishing" for an arguement or for people to antagonize, it fits the definition. This is the purpose of this thread to point out how uneducated people will make up their own definitions of terms they do not understand.

No, I don't believe there is a 'new' definition, its just that certain words mean completely different things on the internet than they do in the English language.

Yes, yes I did. But this isn't a fishing hole, its a forum. So your definition doesn't apply and all three of mine do. I'm sorry if you don't want to believe that this isn't a fishing hole, but it isn't. If it was, I'm pretty sure I would be too busy casting a line and waiting for fish to be answering you right now. kthxbai
